Virtual Photo Challenge: TREES WITH PERSONALITY

NOTE: You can start taking photos as soon as you sign up -- but wait until the start date of the challenge to post your images to the album.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At this time of year, Trees really make themselves known. It's the height of their time of year - plumage at their fullest, they seem to project themselves with personality as they reach toward their source of sustenance, their mysterious roots beneath the earth absorbing nutrients out of sight.
Our challenge this time is to shoot some really great trees that we come in contact with. Using one of the themes provided (or one of your own), give a sense of a personality or trait that your "tree subject" may be portraying.
To join in, sign up anytime between now and the start time of 7am on Wednesday, August 28th.
As with previous challenges, if you RSVP to attend this event, you are making a personal commitment to take at least ONE photo according to your interpretation of a theme, and post at least ONE image in the Designated Album for this challenge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INSTRUCTIONS

By signing up you commit to take at least ONE photo representing your choice of the themes provided - or make up your own themes if you like.

You may take as many photos as you like (in your camera), but post a maximum of 5 images only. Here are some themes to get you started:

TREES WITH PERSONALITY

1. Majestic

2. Etherial

3. Straight-laced

4. Exuberant

5. Confused

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOW IT WORKS
To participate, you must sign up before the start date of this challenge. For this challenge, you can start taking photos as soon as you sign up - but wait until the start date of the challenge before posting to the Album.
Your own personal challenge starts when you RSVP to join us on the challenge. You commit to taking at least ONE photo, based on your interpretation of your choice of themes.
You must post at least ONE image to the Designated Photo Album for this Challenge, and you MUST use the Caption to name a theme which inspired your image.
NOTE: any image posted to the album for this challenge that doesn't include an appropriate Caption will be automatically moved to the Members' Monthly Miscellaneous album without notice.
No other photos are allowed. Your photos must be taken with your camera between the date you signed up and end dates of this challenge. If you cannot post your images between the start and end date of the challenge, you can post later; there is no time limit for posting your images to the Album once the challenge begins.
Use of all of your cameras are welcome, such as SLR, phone, toy, and point & shoots. Computer post-processing techniques (crop, colour correction, etc.) are allowed. To make it more challenging, we encourage use of "in-camera" settings and framing and minimal computer post-processing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

All group members are encouraged to enjoy the photos that are posted by the participants of this challenge and add comments of encouragement and appreciation.

REMEMBER: we will NOT meet in person because this is a VIRTUAL challenge. There will be no judging and no prizes. If you sign up for the challenge, you are making a personal agreement with yourself to take photos and then post your best photos as laid out in the instructions.

Note: If you miss the start date and cannot RSVP, then you must wait for the next challenge... :)

Enjoy!!!!

    I enjoyed seeing everyone's photos, and it was a good exercise to try to see the personality in trees and get that to come out in the photos. Thanks, Trish.

    I agree Kelly - I live IN a park setting and my patio looks into the park and one does sometimes take them for granted but I love walking through the park on the way home as it is so peaceful - good for the soul.

    Sometimes we take our surroundings for granted....I walk past the trees in the park...3-4 times daily....I always enjoy the serenity of being amongst them, and found it interesting to attach personalities to them....

    I was inspired enough to buy a book: "The Tree in Photographs". They have been a classic subject since the dawn of photography, of course. Some of these pix are amazing but I think OUR efforts stand up quite well.

      Great comment. I've thought trees each have a personality since reading Alice In Wonderland as a child. Don't know why the association, but I guess the Wonderland extended to trees.

    Yes, this was fun...I wish I had more time to spend on it, but it makes me looks a trees in a new light!

    Very enjoyable. I've been photographing trees for years, but have never thought about personalities. Now I have yet another way to look at and think about them.

    Challenge is great, it gives me different viewpoint about a tree. Now I have to look twice to check the trees personality.

    Liked that I really studied the trees I met during my wanderings these past couple of weeks. I learned a lot - thanks!

    Hi folks, I've moved a number of photos from the challenge album to the Monthly Misc. album because they obviously were not taken since this past Wednesday, have no Caption, or otherwise not in line with this challenge. Just so there's no confusion as to the intention of the Monthly Misc. album and the intention of the albums for challenges, please read the related Guidelines on our About Us page at, http://www.meetup.com/photo-475/about/

    2 · August 31, 2013

    • Trish

      Here's the related excerpt: Photo Limits & Restrictions in Albums
      There are no restrictions for the number of photos that can be posted to the Monthly Albums by members (within reason!). The photos must be authored by the person posting and can be taken during the month or from the member's personal archive. The photos for the current month's album is intended for photos uploaded during that month and not necessarily "taken" in that month.

      Members should respect the instructions laid out in the Virtual Challenges for number of allowable photos that can be posted to the challenge's album from personal archive and taken during the challenge start and end dates. Each challenge may have a different limit for photos, so please check the instructions before posting. Any photos that do not meet the intention or instructions for the challenge will be moved out of the challenge album to the monthly Misc. album without notice.

    Many are not leaving a caption under their photographs which is part of the challenge, I thought. Am I correct, Trish?

  • Haruo C.

    Rats missed the start date. :(

    August 29, 2013

    • Wendy

      Why don't you take photos of trees and post them as August photographs. That way you can join in, sort of. Do you like that idea?

      August 29, 2013

  • Iluminada M.

    Trish has a miscellaneous album that she uses to put photos that does not have any relevance for the theme of the challenge. Why can't we use it for photos that has been taken in the past. Maybe Trish can do something as a choice on where to post the photo. Participant can use it if you have more than five entries.

    August 29, 2013

    • Trish

      Yes, the monthly Misc. album is definitely the place to share photos that don't fall within the rules of the challenge :)

      August 29, 2013

  • Melody L.

    It's very tempting to go back an find a photo that fits the challenge but then it wasn't taken with those guidelines. In fact I'm looking back at my photos now since I'm house bound. I like trees, take pictures of them all the time but..they aren't within the timeline of the challenge and so it's not in the interest of fair play. Tempting as it is to put them up I would only be "cheating" myself. Other's might guess my transgression of place and time and then I would not look to be a fair player in the field. However, a couple of my trees are taken in August so I can post in the monthly album which I might do--they don't meet the specifications of the challenge but they fit the time for the monthly album. It's hard to resist, isn't it, when you know you have a perfect photo for the challenge. What is totally cool is that everyone is so excited to share their treasures and in that way by sharing. using the guidelines, we learn in such a nice environment. I have learned so much!

      or 2 or 5.. ;)

      August 29, 2013

  • ruth

    aww..does it have to be taken in this time frame? i have such a good one i took this past spring.. ;( trust me.. it's super cool!! ;P

    August 28, 2013

    • Wendy

      Your comment raises the point of the challenge, which is to take photographs within a certain time frame according to the outline of the challenge. If we were all to use photographs taken previously as you suggest, it defeats the purpose that as a 'group' we are going out with our challenge guidelines to enjoy finding the correct settings. Supposedly, we all will have 'good ones' we've taken in the past, but the challenge is not to go through old photos. Maybe one month, Trish could for the month's posting of photographs, add in we can post one photograph of our 'best' ever shot.

      Get well soon.

      August 28, 2013

  • Trish

    Ok, as we're getting started with this challenge... make sure you understand the instructions, and please remember: 1) no more than 5 photos total; 2) must be taken with your camera between the day you signed up and the end date of the challenge (next Tues); and, 3) you must state a "theme" in the Caption. Have fun! :)

    August 28, 2013

  • Melody L.

    Thanks for the kind words. It sure has changed my week. Since I already use a cane the hobbling around is very picturesque or maybe that's grotesque! I have a huge tree in my backyard that seems to be calling my name and it has something to say. Since I've changed my RSVP I'll post on the monthly album when I figure out how to accomplish my idea.

    1 · August 28, 2013

    Hi everyone -- there are a few people who have jumped the gun and have posted their trees early (per instructions, posting doesn't start until tomorrow)... But, I've elected to leave them there because they're such great specimens! Everyone, please remember to use the Caption to specify your choice of a theme for each image or your image will be moved to the monthly Misc. album. Thanks!

      Oops sorry Trish! I got a notification by email reminding me of the event so I mistakenly thought it had started already! Now I know it's tomorrow :)

      Double Oops, guilty as charged sorry I thought we could post as soon as we signed up!

      1 · August 27, 2013

    Is this the first tree-themed event? If so, it could be done once a season. Summer seems to me to be the hardest - fall has leaf colour, winter has tree structure, and spring has flowers.

    1 · August 23, 2013

    • Trish

      Hi Wendy... or better yet, maybe you'd like to host a photo meetup to scout out some trees sometime! :D

      August 24, 2013

  • Wendy

    Thank you, Pat, for the link. Reading the comments below the video of the Disney cartoon, it seems it was a restored one and may even be hand painted animation. Amazing work, but not one I've seen before, although I did watch all of it. Everyone should view it before the photos for this challenge, as we'll not find trees like that or flying birds acting as a siren!
    I think Doug, you are right, it was Fantasia. But I cannot find the right video link with the trees. So, thank you for reminding me, Doug.
    Here for your afternoon enjoyment is another section of Fantasia, featuring the beautiful Clair De Lune by Debussy. Google featured a lovely animation to celebrate his 151st birthday yesterday, with the same music. It was amazing.
    Anyway, back to trees....but thanks both of you.

    August 23, 2013

  • Wendy

    This reminds me of a Disney movie where trees danced. Does anyone remember which one it was? The dance was to a classical music piece, if I recall.
    Great idea for a challenge.

    I love trees, they provide so much. -shade-beauty-colour-privacy. I could go on for ever discussing trees. Thanks Trish for coming up with this challenge.
