Virtual Photo Challenge: GRAFFITI

Graffiti is hitting an all-time high in every city and the level of artistic endeavour is amazing. Considered "vandalism" by neighbourhoods and building owners, artist communities celebrate this wonderful mode of artistic expression as the most amazing optical illusions and feats of artistic ability abound.

For this challenge, shoot Graffiti that you encounter during September and October 2013, and post up to 25 of your BEST shots. In addition, you may post THREE graffiti images from your archives (best of all time shots). You can start taking photos and post your images to the album anytime after you sign up.

Here is the Designated Album for the Graffiti Challenge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSTRUCTIONS
Photos for this challenge must be taken in your camera within the months of September and October 2013 with Graffiti as the main subject.
No more than 25 images per member are allowed, PLUS you may post 3 graffiti images from your personal archives. (Yes, that's 28 photos in total per member!!!)
Members are encouraged to discuss LOCATIONS and artistic merit of the graffiti, as well as dates and times of day, in the image Caption and comments.
Use of all of your cameras are welcome, such as SLR, phone, toy, and point & shoots. Computer post-processing techniques (crop, colour correction, etc.) are allowed. To make it more challenging, we encourage use of "in-camera" settings and framing and minimal computer post-processing.
PLEASE NOTE: Any photos posted to the Album for this challenge that do not adhere to the instructions will be moved to the Monthly album without notice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

REMEMBER: we will NOT meet in person because this is a VIRTUAL challenge. There will be no judging and no prizes. If you sign up for the challenge, you are making a personal agreement with yourself to take photos and then post your best photos as laid out in the instructions.

Enjoy!!!!

    I completely concur with the previous comments - I loved wandering down alleys, looking for new and hidden gems. Also loved seeing what everyone else found. Thanks for this opportunity, Trish!

    Excellent challenge. It made me keep my eyes open all the time for wall art and I see it more than I did before. Sometimes I want to stop the car and go back and take a shot.

    It was excellent - what fun to adventure out and look for this type of art - and everyone had such great photos, even from distant places which made it even more enjoyable. Thank you Trish for such a great idea

      Hi Len.. sorry for the delay in replying. . Somehow I have missed your reply and just saw it.. I live at Marine and Heather..

      Thanks for the helpful tips.. Must go around and see..

      I think most people find graffiti in the commercial or industrial areas of Vancouver. There might be some south on Marine between Oak and Boundary. I don't know. Might be worth an exploration trip.

    Hi, Graffiti lovers - Banksy, renowned graffiti artist, is visiting NYC this month and doing 'something' every day. He gives a general location on his blog and then people have to search for the art. Here's a link which shows several examples: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/10/20/238454299/see-banksys-month-so-far-in-new-york-city

    I posted one which I absolutely love... September 25, I think. Keith Richards. And have more ready for one of these days....

    Yes, yes. I love alleys - there is almost always graffiti and it changes frequently. For mural art, try taking one of the self-guided tours here: http://muralsvancouver.ca/artists/

    Alleys behind Commercial Drive are good as well.

      Judy, Thanks an excellent suggestion. I never considered Commercial Drive but I would imagine it might have as much as I see along Main Street. I'll have to check it out. To bad I didn't see till after I cam back from my bike ride.

      I hope somebody posts some Commercial Drive graffiti.

    I am not too sure but the ones I found with a friend were somewhere around Chinatown and Gastown in the alleys

    I never shoot graffiti photos before, so far I just feel they are making a mess for a beautiful environment. But I would like to try, maybe I will like it. Who knows? :-)

      I agree with Diane. I don't like gang tags or just random stupid stuff but some street art is really interesting. It's just a matter of taste. Like all art is. Some people probably think Banksy is a criminal. I think he's brilliant. Look at it with a open mind. You never know.

      I am sorry, I have to withdraw, as I cannot make it to shoot graffiti. I do not know that is not my interest.

    I haven't posted yet because I was checking out some of the great locations for graffiti and in the meantime I see the concept of the challenge has changed somewhat. It now includes wall art and murals? I always considered graffiti to be something different but if this is the case I will look for some of that as well.

      I suppose you're correct -- and I hadn't thought about it really. Now that you mention it Graffiti doesn't really mean commissioned, sanctioned works. In the interest of fun and photography, I would say that if there's great art on walls of buildings (or other structures) -- then it's fair game. If the works are illegal or commissioned would be a difficult question to sort out and perhaps would detract from the fun we're having now. And if we don't differentiate too much then it is certainly is easier for me to moderate...

    I just heard about the chalk festival in Victoria... I guess the term is "street art" for real. Some of the photos are just amazing!!! Here's the link, http://www.victoriachalkfestival.com ... but they seem to have more photos on their FB page, here, https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaChalkFestival/photos_stream .

    Just to confirm and to make sure that I have it right: after signing up, pictures can already be uploaded in this album, up to and including October 30th, i.e., there is no other start date?

    Looking forward to this interesting challenge. I recently did a graffiti mural art walk where we met the artists. There should be another one coming up shortly. There was one artist who travels to different cities and he happened to be in town working on this. Can't wait to see all the murals from evereyone from different parts of thw world. Should be quite interesting.n Thanks Trish for coming up with this. :)

    I've increased the number of total images allowed to 25 plus 3 archive images to provide less restrictions for this challenge. :)
