This is a lovely event. We've been many times and it's just gorgeous with so many interesting and beautiful photo opportunities.
NOTE THIS CHANGE OF PLANS: We will no longer be meeting "inside" the gate after tickets are bought. INSTEAD, We will meet and organize ourselves between 3:30 and 4pm OUTSIDE the ticket gate to take advantage of group ticket discount. The first 10+ people who arrive before 4pm will form a group in the line to buy group tickets. If you arrive after 4pm (or after the main group has formed), then you may be on your own or will need to form another group later in the lineup depending on how long the line is when you arrive.
Please note that the parking lots are apparently full before 4:30pm, so leave yourself lots and lots of time to park and arrive to meet the group.
We will try to stick together throughout our walk through the garden after entry. If you want to wander off, then fine. If you wish to stick with the group, then buddy up and look out for each other as we all wander and shoot.
Cost of tickets for this special Festival of Lights at VanDusen Garden is $14.25 per person.
See the festival web site here, and click the link at the top of the page for all info: http://vandusengarden.org/visit/whats-happening/featured-events
Parking: from downtown, take Cambie Street, turn right onto West 33rd Avenue at the traffic lights. Proceed west along West 33rd until you reach Oak Street (about 5 blocks). Turn left onto Oak, proceed south four blocks and turn right onto West 37th, then turn right to enter the designated parking lot.
By bus: from downtown take #17 Oak bus, get off at West 37th Avenue, cross the street and it's right there.
What to expect: this will be low-light photography setting but newer point and shoot cameras will be able to handle many shots because there are so many lights. If you're serious, you will want to bring a tripod.
Peer advisors: as with most of our outings, we encourage newer photographers to ask questions of other members and seek help in setting up shots, and those who love to teach are encouraged to discuss and advise on technical setup.
Food: there will be lots of snacks and hot and cold refreshments on sale throughout the gardens. (We are considering dinner after the event... stay tuned for more details.)
In case of rain, we will move the date to Sunday, Dec 29th, same time. Die-hards may feel we're being sissies about a little rain but truly, we have braved serious downpours as well as light rain at this event and after all that we feel that going to VanDusen for this lovely event in the rain is just not worth it. Fingers crossed those in charge of rain will be thinking of us that night. :)
See you there!
