Vancouver Skyline @ Sunrise

Update at 7pm, Saturday Aug. 16 -- the weather forecast is variable clouds at sunrise. Therefore, Pete may NOT appear as host for the event to get the primo shot below... BUT it won't be raining and the sun should at least make an appearance at dawn, therefore everyone is encouraged to attend with or without Pete as host. If you show up, I'm sure you'll enjoy the morning shoot at the beach with others who show up. ~Trish.

There is a place along the seawall (between the Harry Jerome running statue and the 9 o'clock Cannon) that I absolutely love to catch at sunrise. I'd be more than happy to share my process with the group members about how I made this image and to help them create their own versions: This is an early one and you can't be late - the sun won't wait for us! I usually like to be on location & setting up at least 45 minutes prior to the listed sunrise time. (The sunrise is scheduled for 6:08am that day)

Glad to see so many great reviews of the event, though the weather wasn't that great. Super nice photos all. :)

It was actually a very pleasant morning Trish....yes some awesome photos...I was surprised to see who had posted the photos....I didn't see many of the group...no "hellos" happened before picture taking started....so hello Alan, Paul, Katia, etc .....sorry I missed you!

It was fun coming out this morning. I agree with Brigitte in that the reflections were nice and that the light with the overcast skies created that soft mood.

What a wonderful morning to view the city skyline. Even though the sun did not make it's appearance, the city reflections were great.

Hey, we (my husband and I) needed a ride as well. We live on University Drive, across the street from the Gateway skytrain. Too early for public commute sadly, especially since it's a Sunday.
I know it's short notice so I'll understand if it's not possible.

Thanks so much for the offer. I read this late and we'd decided to pass because of the weather and visibility. Hope you guys had fun!

Pete, would you be hosting this again whether you show up or not? I'm looking forward to attending but was hoping you'd be there too to get some guidance. Coming from NW though so don't necessarily want to make the drive out there that early if you don't end up coming (will go to Burnaby Mountain instead).

Thanks Pete. Short notice is just fine, whatever works for you... anytime. :)

Thanks Trish for updating the event!!

I feel bad - I guess when I came up with the idea I'd just been so used to the perfect weather streak - worst timing - hope they still all take the idea and run with it - it's honestly worth it either way!!

    4 · August 16

    • Trish

Don't feel bad, Pete. The most difficult part of the photo meetups is dealing with the weather. Glad some seem to have made it out -- thanks for your idea and inspiration and hope to have you host again whenever you like. :)

Morning everyone. Looking out the window it's really cloudy here. According to sky tracker the sun won't show itself until 7am. I'm opting out this time.

But it's beautiful out here! lol

Ha! Sitting here having coffee and looking out the window. Cloudy, cloudy, cloudy. Love the clouds, but I don't see any sun peaking through. I'm sure you will rock it either way Rob. I'm staying home.

Looks like parking is $3.25 per hour 6am to 11pm, or $11 for 24 hours. However the closest lot only has hourly parking.

I'm coming from Coquitlam and can share the ride and parking for up to 3 people. Route: through Port Moody, down the Barnett and then Hastings to Pender then into the Park.

I can assure you.... there are no parking tickets issued at that time of day ;)

Hey Everyone.... so at the time of my meetup suggestion for this (which was perhaps a bit premature to predict the weather properly), the forecast said "clear".

It doesn't call for rain, but truthfully, this image is definitely something I prefer to shoot when the sky is clear(er). I meant to post that this was "weather permitting". I always use the clear sky report, within 24-hours of my shoots, to get the best predictions.

It's a beautiful peaceful shoot regardless of the weather, but I'm not sure I want to risk doing it without clear(er) skies. If I wake up and it's going to look crappy for sunrise, I'm not going to make an appearance.

  • sharon

Is everyone else still going? With the change in event, I will probably make an appearance a bit later than the 5:30am time.

    1 · August 16

  • Brad

Pete, I assume that your photographic advice may have to wait until another time too?

    August 16

  • Trish

I'll chime in with confirmation that the event WILL DEFINITELY PROCEED whether or not the weather is conducive for the original aim: beautiful clear weather shots; and whether or not Pete will make it out to join you as host.

As others have suggested, the conditions will not be all bad and there will be some good shots to be had even though the forecast is variable clouds and partial sun at sunrise. Therefore, if you're game to come out and shoot at the beach at sunrise with others, I encourage you to proceed...

Most of you have been to Meetup events before and know the drill (mingle, introduce yourselves, be friendly and generally helpful to each other), and this group of participants is comprised of mature and self-sufficient individuals. I'm sure you'll have fun if you go, and I'm sure you'll find some good shots... it won't be raining and the sun will hopefully make at least an appearance at dawn.

    2 · August 16

    • Trish

Many thanks to Pete for the idea for the Meetup and offer to host - and for getting everyone together, whether or not you attend :)

  • Brad

I'll check the old pulse at 05:00 so I could be a no-show...

    August 16

I will check the clear sky report this evening and let you all know what it looks like and give you a definitive 'yes' or 'no' as to whether or not I'll be attending. If the conditions aren't up to my standards, there is absolutely nothing stopping anyone from giving it a go without me ;)

    August 16

    • Trish

Thanks Pete - it will be great if you could provide your decision whether you'll be coming when you make that determination. Thanks so much.

      August 16

  • Mike

The picture that Pete posted is AMAZING! If it ends up that he doesn't think the conditions are right in the morning, I hope he will try for another day. In any event, I think it was generous of him to offer his expertise to us in the first place.

Hey...is anyone out there willing to car pool? I'm the one with no car and I live in the West End and kind of on the way. Not really wanting to walk there at that time in the morning, and especially carrying gear. I'm just off of Davie Street.
