Virtual Photo Challenge: Photo-A-Day Week 1

This is the FIRST Photo-A-Day challenge in a series of 3 x weekly challenges - inspired by our popular challenge series held in the Summer of 2012.

This is Week 1, next week will be Week 2, and the week after will be Week 3. A separate invite will be sent out for each weekly challenge. You are welcome to sign up for one or more of the three challenges.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BACKGROUND
For some of us, just getting out with a camera is a lot of work. Well, it's not really a lot of work, but resistance, apathy, excuses, or forgetfulness can get in the way. Remembering to plug in the battery each night, remembering to take our camera (at least a small camera) with us when we go out, or remembering to take a photo even if there's a camera handy... That's the hard part.
This Virtual Challenge is designed to set in motion a good habit, or at least a habit that an aspiring photographer wishes to have. To take photos. A lot of photos. And to do this, we need to be comfortable with our practice as a photographer, and we need to be comfortable with our gear. This is about taking at least a small amount of time to concentrate on photography each day. Regularly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INSTRUCTIONS

Special Note: you must sign up before the start date to take part in this challenge.

To take part in this week's challenge you must sign up before the start date and commit to take one photo each day, for 7 days beginning at 7am on August 25. That's one photo each day during the period between the start and the end dates of this challenge.

You must post a single image for each day of the challenge to the DESIGNATED ALBUM for this week's challenge. You can post the image after the date you took the photo, but if you do, you must state in the Caption the actual date the photo was taken (with your camera). No other photos are allowed. One photo per day only. There are no restrictions on what to shoot, or how you produce your images.

NOTE: any images posted to the Album for this challenge that don't conform to the instructions will be automatically moved to the Members' Monthly Miscellaneous album without notice.

Use of all of your cameras are welcome, such as SLR, phone, toy, and point & shoots. Computer post-processing techniques (crop, colour correction, etc.) are allowed. To make it more challenging, we encourage use of "in-camera" settings and framing and minimal computer post-processing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All group members are encouraged to enjoy the photos that are posted by the participants of this challenge and add comments of encouragement and appreciation.
REMEMBER: we will NOT meet in person because this is a VIRTUAL challenge. There will be no judging and no prizes. If you sign up for the challenge, you are making a personal agreement with yourself to take photos and then post your best photos as laid out in the instructions.
Enjoy!!!!
    There is software that can read a damaged card. Google for it. Also Lexar gives out a download with some of their higher end cards.
    http://www.cardrecovery.com/?rid=google&kid=cr5003 seems to be what you want.
    I saved a friends images using one of these. The one I used worked for free up to a certain size which was enough for her problem.
    • Darrell M.
      Thanks Paul. I'll give it a try.
      September 2, 2014
    • Darrell M.
      Thanks Again Paul. The Card Recovery site worked and I was able to retrieve my photos. Thanks Again.
      September 3, 2014
  • Darrell M.
    This is a great challenge. Will post once I find out how to retrieve lost photos. My computer froze when uploading from my memory card and when I restarted my photos they were gone from both computer and memory card. Does anyone know how to retrieve lost photos. I means I'll be missing two day from this series. Thanks
    September 1, 2014
    • Darrell M.
      I lost my photos for the first two days of this challenge. If They can be found, I will post them. For now I'll start on Wednesday.
    Good, it made me get out there every day.
  • sam b.
    This is for Melody. I love what you wrote and for what photography means for you. It is amazing what we see with our eyes that others don't see or perhaps wouldn't notice the way we do. Your words were so very poignant.
    Good JOB everyone! Fantastic submissions. I'm continually amazed at how wonderfully you all "see". Very inspiring. Thank you! :)
    September 1, 2014
  • Shelley
    Really good to get me disciplined. Thanks a lot.
  • Gerry B.
    Great challenge, and incentive. Want to do better next round, though. Am so impressed by everyone's work.
    1 · September 1, 2014
  • Len W.
    What I like about this challenge is that causes you start being aware of your surroundings. I see photo opportunities all the time now when I'm out walking or biking. All but one of my photos was within walking distance of my house. I'm always on the hunt for the one good photo. That's one advantage of a smart phone. You always have a camera with you.
  • ruth
    It was AWESOME!! i love taking pics anyway, and was taking them almost everyday too, but this just gave me incentive to take more and to look for more! Fun fun fun! :D
    1 · September 1, 2014
  • Cecile
    This challenge is great, I'm enjoying it!
    1 · September 1, 2014
  • Paul D.
    Got me working at it more. I've avoided these before because I didn't want to make photography a "have to do" thing and like work. But it is worth working at and not just waiting for the right moment.
    1 · September 1, 2014
  • Carol
    Great meetup. I had to think about photography every day and that's a good thing. Ready for week 2.
    1 · September 1, 2014
  • David D.
    Thanks for getting me off my butt and back out the door. Really enjoying this challenge! :)
    2 · September 1, 2014
  • bill
    So I just posted my last picture of the challenge. I made it a little more difficult and took all my shots using my 105mm macro lens. Next week...10-20mm wide angle shots only...
    2 · August 31, 2014
    • kelly
      That's a great idea bill....maybe I'll do something similar...and pull out a lens I hardly ever use......
      1 · August 31, 2014
    • Carol
      I did the same using only my 35mm lens until Day 7 when I wanted a nice shot of the sky.
      1 · August 31, 2014
  • Melody L.
    I find it hard not to take a picture a day. Only one picture a day would be a problem. I'd go into withdrawal. I can't imagine not seeing something I want to photograph. Just ask my long suffering husband why I'm always miles behind him on our walks. Just ask those cows who didn't want me there today or my husband saying "come on get outta there". Someone asked me once why I do that. Well, the answer is simple. I might not see it again and this way I have it forever. I'd like all my photos to be masterpieces but they aren't. They're just stuff I see along the way and sometimes someone else might like them too. Can hardly wait for next week's bunch of photos and the ideas they will awaken in me for my next trip to wherever.
    6 · August 31, 2014
  • Trish
    How's this working for you all? Do you find it difficult or easy to shoot each day?? If you forget one day, don't drop out -- just carry on and shoot the rest of the days.
    August 27, 2014
    • Craig
      I think its great! Its got me out seeing,and feeling and shooting again.I really enjoy shooting ever day, but have recently been stuck in a little dead spot, so when I saw this challenge I HAD to jump in. Thanks Trish.
      August 29, 2014
    • Trish
      Just the ticket, Craig! Glad it's working for you!!!!
      August 29, 2014
  • Trish
    Just a reminder -- if you're planning to carry on to the second week of this daily challenge series, make sure you're signed up before Monday. Here's the link to Week 2 - http://www.meetup.com/photo-475/events/201677882/
  • Kathryn
    I have switched to my DSLR camera and discovered that all were shot in NEF and my lightroom program is not installed on my new computer.... sigh guess I will upload on the weekend? and label them?
    August 28, 2014
    • Trish
      Yep, that's fine Kathryn... if you post your pictures after the date you took them, then label each picture with the date in the Caption.
      August 29, 2014
  • kelly
    I'm sorry, but I just find it so annoying while looking through the album to see photos that clearly were not taken yesterday (Monday)....what is the point of participating in this challenge if you are not grabbing your camera daily and taking a picture....what are you getting out of it? It's not a showcase for photos taken before yesterday....or is it .....maybe it's me that's not reading the rules correctly....?
    5 · August 26, 2014
    • Trish
      OK, with Kelly's help, I've moved more images from the challenge Album to the Monthly Misc. Album. It's pretty obvious if someone posts 5 pictures and we're only on Day 3. If I've moved your photo incorrectly, please send me a message and we'll get it sorted out.
      August 27, 2014
    • Trish
      Remember folks, post on the day you took the photo... or, if you want to post after the day you took the photo then cite the date in the Caption. Thanks.
      August 27, 2014
  • Marilyn S.
    I am already involved in the 365 project--taking and posting a photo every day for a year. I have lagged a bit behind in my posting, but I have been taking a lot of photos. It's a great discipline and helps me to look for new subjects.
    1 · August 27, 2014
    • Marilyn S.
      You go to 365.org and sign up with a user name. (It's free unless you want extra options). Then you make a commitment to take and post a photo each day for a year. If you get behind (like I have) you can always post them later. You choose the date that you want the photo posted to. People from all over the world take part and you can view other people's photos and choose to follow them if you like, and leave a comment. It's fun.
      August 27, 2014
    • Trish
      That's great, thanks Marilyn!!! :)
      1 · August 27, 2014
  • Trish
    Please note: if you missed signing up for this challenge, or if you're keen to carry on beyond 1 week... you can sign up for the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the series which I've just announced.
    August 27, 2014
  • Sylvia
    This challenge is already helpful as I have come up against one of my weaknesses - tech issues. I am having a problem uploading an image onto the album. I know this cannot be hard. Help! Thanks.
    August 25, 2014
    • Judy
      Gee - guess I'm lazy. I go to the page where people have already uploaded photos and look for the little message at the top left which says "add photos". I click on that and follow the prompts!
      1 · August 26, 2014
    • Sylvia
      Thank you so much everyone. Almost magically the 'add photos' option appeared and it was super easy after that. Appreciate the help very much!
      2 · August 26, 2014
  • Doug G.
    Me too. Some people apparently are not reading the directions.
    1 · August 26, 2014
  • Stella
    Me too..
    1 · August 26, 2014
  • Paul D.
    I have to agree with Kelly on this.
    2 · August 26, 2014
  • Karen (Country-City Gal )
    My cell mini SD card, and my camera SD card, are both with my computer that's in for repairs, so I won't be able to contribute until I get both of those back... which I hope will be sooooon.
    2 · August 22, 2014
    • Rhonda
      Sometimes using a more limited camera forces more brain use to get a good picture...
      1 · August 25, 2014
    • Trish
      If all else fails, you can get a disposable film camera at the drugstore :)
      1 · August 25, 2014
  • Judy
    Glad we aren't worrying about the quality of the subject of our daily posts - at the rate my day is progressing, the photo will likely be of dirty dishes in the sink!
    4 · August 25, 2014
    • Trish
      That's the idea, Judy! Thanks for being so honest. :)
      August 25, 2014
    • param
      Ok me going out to click one pic for today.
      1 · August 25, 2014
  • Trish
    OK people, we start tomorrow! Make sure you have your batteries charged tonight. Remember, it's not about "what" you shoot or how good it is... the important thing is that you shoot something, every day of the challenge. Have fun! :)
    2 · August 24, 2014
    • Len W.
      It doesn't have to be outside. It can be anything you like as long as it's one photo per day. Be creative. I think one of my photos this week will be an inside photo. I'm going to set something up.
      2 · August 25, 2014
    • Trish
      Thanks everyone for your questions and musings. Sorry about the rude member - they no longer exist in Meetup... OK, as Len suggested above, the rules are: starting today for 7 days, take at least one photo and post your image to the Album for this challenge. No archive images allowed. If you want to post your pics from before today, you can post to the Misc. album. More questions welcome :)
      2 · August 25, 2014
  • Lucho B.
    Great idea Trish! Making photography an habit really help to improve shooting skills.
    As a little inspiration I went a little far with this form of challenge in 2011 and I took one picture everyday at the same hour for a month. Here:
      Very interesting Lucho!
      1 · August 24, 2014
    This will be interesting to see what pics people will post. Such diversity should be very inspiring and enjoyable. :)
    2 · August 24, 2014
  • Barry B.
    ALWAYS have more than one camera :^)
    1 · August 23, 2014
  • Melody L.
    Sounds good to me. Just to make sure Trish I will recap what I believe are the rules of this challenge. Challenge starts Aug 25 and goes for 7 days--only one post a day of one photo--any subject. Can hardly wait to see what fantastic photos everyone comes up with.
    August 18, 2014
    • Trish
      Yep that's it Melody. And... Post after the day you took the pic if you like but cite the date of photo in the caption. :)
      August 19, 2014
  • Len W.
    As an added challenge to myself, I'm going to try to not repeat any photo subject. I'm going to try to make each photo unique. We'll see how well I do.
    1 · August 18, 2014
    • Len W.
      Now that I have an IPhone, I always have a camera with me. I'm always seeing things to take photos of. I'm always looking for that one photo that could go viral.
      2 · August 19, 2014
    • Melody L.
      I just have a point and shoot camera and it lives in my pocket--can't leave home without it. I'll be watching for your viral photo.
