Photography 101: Hands on Introduction to the Digital Camera

  • May 18, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Are you new to digital photography, or making the switch to digital from film? Do you have an understanding of photographic concepts, but want to learn how they translate to your camera? Do you want to learn some of your camera's features, and how to use them? Do you own a DSLR, mirrorless, or advanced point and shoot camera? Then this class is for you.

This class is the second of a 3-part series (Photography 100, 101, and 102). I highly recommend that you consider signing up for all three classes, especially if you are new to digital photography. Each of the three classes has its own meetup page, and you must sign up on each page individually, if you wish to attend each class.

There is no cost for the class. The class size will be limited 30 persons.

This class will be an intensive hands-on session on learning how to operate the camera. We will learn where the camera controls are, and what they do. The emphasis will be on hands on manipulation of the camera settings. Participants must bring their camera manual, because the class will go back to it again and again.

The class will go from 10:00 AM until 5:30 PM. We will break in the middle for lunch.

Note the class prerequisites: Your attendance in the class assumes that you understand the following:

ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture, and how the three relate to each other.

Also, the class assumes that you understand the concept of stops of exposure. In other words, if the instructor tells you to increase your exposure by two stops using aperture, you understand what that means and can do it on your camera.

If you don't understand the above, please sign up for the Photo 100 class before attending this class.

Class requirements for everyone:

- Bring something to take notes.

- Digital camera with fresh batteries.
- Empty memory card.
- The camera's instruction manual.

For this, you will need the 100+ page camera manual. If the only printed material that you have is a quick start guide or something that is less than 30 or 40 pages, then that is not the camera manual. The manual will either be on your camera's DVD, or you will have to download it before class. If you don't bring the full manual with you, you will not be able to keep up in the class.

I meant to mention at the class, the Mandarin General Store is open for tours two Sundays a month. I'm going to try to go today, but it's also open the Sunday after 102. You can visit any day for exteriors, but check the schedule for interior shots.

Venue was less than ideal, but we made it work. No that we're more familiar with each other, there was much more chatter, whych nnd of interrupted the flow at times...but then again, its good to know the people we'll see at future meetups.

I really enjoyed the second class meet up today. Got to learn more new functions on my camera, that will further me along for manual settings. Thanks to Larry :) Thanks to everyone for being there and looking forward to our third class at the Walter Jones Park, June 1st. If anyone wants to hang out afterwards and catch the sunset, I plan on going down on the County Dock afterwards. It's right next to the park. Walk out on the dock and get some really beautiful sunset photos.

The class was very good. Having the functions of the digital camera reviewed and then practiced was very helpful. I feel like I came away with a much better understanding of the most important functions of my D90 camera.

Hi everyone!! I have uploaded the two documents for the class to this site. In the menu bar, click on More....Files, and download the two documents with Photo 101 in the name. You can either print them, or bring them to class in electronic format. Just ensure, either way, that you bring paper and pencil to the class, to take notes and write down camera settings.

There is actually something you are covering that has been a big dilemma for me...maybe I can figure it out with the documents for the class. Thanks.
