Photography 100: Introduction to Digital Photography

Are you new to photography? Do you own a DSLR or advanced point and shoot camera? Do you want to learn about why your camera functions the way that it does? Then this class is for you.

This class is the first of a 3-part series (Photography 100, 101, and 102). I highly recommend that you consider signing up for all three classes, especially if you are new to digital photography. Each of the three classes has its own meetup page, and you must sign up on each page individually, if you wish to attend each class.

There is no cost for this class. The class size will be limited 25 persons.

This class will be an intensive introduction to the basic concepts of digital photography. It is intended for persons who are new to digital photography, or persons who are moving from a point and shoot camera to a DSLR, or persons who use an advanced point and shoot camera and want to learn more about how it works.

The class will start by introducing the photographic triangle and the concept of stops of exposure, and then will advance to taking pictures in program, aperture, and shutter priority modes. Finally, the class will cover taking pictures in full manual mode, and making adjustments in manual mode to achieve the correct exposure.

Participants must bring their camera manual, because the class will go back to it again and again.

The class will go from 10:00 AM until around 5:45 PM. We will take a Very short break in the middle for lunch.

Class requirements for everyone:

-Bring something to take notes.

- Digital camera with fresh batteries.
- Empty memory card.
- The camera's instruction manual.

For this, you will need the 100+ page camera manual. If the only printed material that you have is a quick start guide or something that is less than 30 or 40 pages, then that is not the camera manual. The manual will either be on your camera's DVD, or you will have to download it before class. If you don't bring the full manual with you, you will not be able to keep up in the class.

Syllabus

-An introduction to how the camera works

-Camera battery and picture card operation

-Auto focus and manual focus

-Learn exposure: effect of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO (the photographic triangle)

-Learn how to use your camera beyond the automatic mode (Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual).

-Manual mode exercise/Getting a correct exposure

-Review of the class materials

I'm just curious. I'm #4 on the waiting list and there are 4 guest on the attendance list. Am I on the waiting list because of the guest who are not members of this group? If so, is that truly fair to the members?

    1 · November 30

    • Elizabeth Goff

Maybe there should be a way to indicate whether the guest is also a member or not. Because in my case, my guest is also a member. It was just easier to sign us up together. Sorry if this was not the correct way to do that. This is the first class we've both attended! :)

      November 30

    • Kimberly

Elizabeth, it's fine. I just don't feel it's fair for non-members to jump members so I thought I'd ask. I've had a lot of difficulty trying to get into these classes and have been trying for a while now. It just seems to me that for a non-member to reap a benefit that is not afforded a member then where are the rewards if membership. Just my thoughts ...

The only manual I found online for my camera (Nikon D3100) is called a Reference Manual. It's 227 pages, so hopefully it's the correct one. (I put it on my Kindle)

Hi Larry. I just found out yesterday I made the attending list and saw today that we are suppose to bring some papers from a link you have. My home computer is not pulling it up...the computer is done lol. I was wondering if you will have extra copies at the class? If not maybe I can get on the computer at the library real quick and print them out.

    November 30

    • Larry Heckel

Kindle is fine, by the way.

Kimberly, I made it off the waiting list this afternoon but had to change my RSVP as I'd made other plans when I wasn't on the list this morning. Maybe you'll move up to take my place. Good luck! This sounds like a great class and just what I need so I hope there will be another opportunity for me.

      November 30

    • Kimberly

Thanks Sandra. I made it :))). Thank you :)))

  • Sandra Moyle

Larry, an email sent yesterday afternoon just popped up in my inbox that said I went from wait list to participant. I checked the wait list this morning and it still had me as # 1. I dont know why Comcast delivered the email so late. Please don't block me from trying again!

    November 30

    • Larry Heckel

Sandra, if you look again at the date on the email, you will see that it went out this afternoon. I added you to the RSVP list during my lunch today.

      November 30

  • Brina Nolan

I will be attending tomorrows class. However, I had reserved a spot for my friend as well. She will not be able to make it to this class, due to a family emergency. So maybe a space could be opened up,to fill her spot. Sorry for the late notice, but I was just informed myself.

    Hey Larry,
I'm on this page now and I can not find anything to download and print. Am I on the correct page?

I'm curious as to which # I am on the wait list. Could an Event Host please tell me? On the app, the list is alphabetized. I've been wanting to take this class since January, so I really hope I get into this one. Thanks in advance.

Im confused, i thought this class was moved from Oct 20th to Nov 10th. Is there still a photography 100 class scheduled for November 10th?

    October 20

  • Scott J. Smith

Thanks for scheduling this round. Wasn't expecting it to come so soon, but glad you're offering this, even though many of us have various conflicts weekends between Thanksgiving and the New Year. I look forward to attending in early 2013!

    October 19

  • LoRob

ummmm ok How did I get on the waiting list for all of the classes when I was already on the listed??????

    October 19

    • Larry Heckel

These are new classes, posted last night. There is no mechanism in the group, that I know of, for folks on the waiting list for one iteration of the class, to automatically get into the next iteration of the class. The sign ups for each class are independent of each other.
