Snowdrop Sunday

  • Feb 17, 2013 · 10:00 AM

We will start the morning, after meeting at Saffron Plastics to minimise the cars we use, then travel over to Warley Place, then after a quick walk round we will travel onto Easton Lodge near Great Dunmow, the gates open here at 12.00 for only a few hours.

This could be the first chance this year to get out as a group, as normal it's weather permitting, so please keep an eye on the site, if not to good we may cancel at short notice.

Twas a bit misty on the day we went. The view over Harold Hill in the album was about as far as we could see (and even that was shrouded in haze). The view from the old Chestnuts is fantastic, tho

There was a poster saying the view, but I thought it was going to be just fields. Should have realised if they put a notice there it must have been worth taking alook

Glad you found it OK and enjoyed it. Doesn't look like I'm going to get my own private nature reserve to myself anymore!

We went to Warley house, although it says not open you can still get in, the gate is closed but you can open it and go up to the car park then go through the gate, they ask for you to leave a little something in the box.

To answer Terry's question about Warley Place I think you would find part of it accessible but not all. The main path up to the walled garden and conservatory should be ok although their maybe a kissing gate to get through. You should be able to get some nice shots of the snowdrops and trees etc. For others there are good hard paths generally but there are slopes and steps as well, particularly if you want to get tto the bird hides.
I only intend to go to Warley so if anyone else doing this needs a lift (Owen?) they can come with me.

Hi Dave, Yes knew is was open all year to members, but didn't think non-members could get in too.

Further to the comments below I have contacted the Trustees and there is no problem at all in visiting Sunday. It is a peaceful little haven and they don't over publicise it is open all year round.

Jacquelyne is right about Warley Place Reserve, it's only open for about six weeks from 2nd March to 14th April this year. Looks like we'll have to reschedule.

    Hi all,

I've never managed a meeting as I'm busy elsewhere on Wednesday evenings. :-(

But, I'm thinking of coming along on this weekend meet, to meet some other like minded peeps. BUT I have a question or two please...

Has anyone been to either of these two places? I ask as I'm disabled and use crutches / sticks and a mobility scooter a lot of the time.

Easton Loddge quote: 'The Gardens are mainly laid to lawn so, under dry weather conditions, they are reasonably accessible. However, if the weather has been very wet then the lawns tend to become more difficult to negotiate.'

Can anyone add to this but also is Warley Place similar?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Terry

Warley Place is a nature reserve and although I have not been, it is probably gravel paths at best. It had been abandoned for a number of years so it may be difficult for scooter access. A couple of people have been before and may be able to elaborate.

The last time I went to Easton Lodge was a few years ago and it was very pleasant with some gravel paths, low cut manicured lawns so should be OK if it isn't too wet. The Italianate garden is a bit uneven with steps down to the pool but should be OK to navigate.

Probably only able to go on the first part to Warley Place. Sundays don't agree with me too well!
