Cathedral Basilica, St. Louis

Have contacted one of the Sister's and asked questions about touring/photographing the inside of the Basilica. She encouraged a tour first, then take photos after. Tripods and flashes are welcome, though she asked for no flash photos of the mosaics (hotspots will magically appear on your photos). They request a $2.00 donation from each person and the tour will take about an hour.

Have scheduled this for the afternoon as I have a dog show at Purina Farms in the morning. :)  Hope to see you all there!

I attended the Basilica meet-up last week & am so glad I did. It was my 1st meet-up w/ this group & altho I did not really mingle much I could see this being a great bunch. I have to admit I'm disappointed w/ my photos, felt like just when I was getting in the right mode I was asked to pack it up. It was just so grand that I didn't know where to begin & I found myself just gazing. Oh well...I can always go back. Larry was awesome, our tour guide, loved his passion & knowledge for this landmark, city & his faith. Can't wait for the next outing!

I know what you mean - it was a beautiful, sensory overload. :) It's hard with an organized tour, in a basilica no less, to socialize much. I've been a group member for just over 6 months (I think this is my 4th meetup) and am enjoying it more each time. My photos or skills to take them have improved - I am more pleased with the result now than when I first began. And this is a very friendly group that is not shy about sharing what works for them or, what I might try differently to get the result I want - for which I'm very happy about. Plus we get to visit great places for photos opportunities. Don't be hard on your photos - post a couple and use the compliments/comments as useful tools. Hope to see you at the next meetup and so glad you came to this one!

I am fairly new to this group and have not attended a lot of Meet Ups. I have been to the Cathedral many times years ago but not since I have been studying photography the last year or so more avidly. The photographs are so inspiring that this group took. It is amazing to me what you captured. The Cathedral is open 7am to 5pm and you can go anytime but they have 3 or more masses and prayer services a day in case you want to return and take pictures earlier in the day between events. I found out the organ is played for a half hour at 4:15pm on Sunday before 5pm mass in case you want to hear it. They have a choir that sings with the organ at 10AM Sunday mass. I spoke to Monsignor Pins, the pastor of the Cathedral and told him what a great experience this was and how artful your pictures were to see. I am sending him a link so he can view the compositions. I usually don't get this enthused but I appreciate the learning experience and value the sharing of this talented community.

My experience has been that, as a general rule, we all assemble and introduce ourselves. This meetup was an exceptionally large group, making it difficult to "meetup"! Photography is such an individual experience which does not lend itself to being social while we're shooting. Each one is a different experience.

    4 · March 6, 2013

    • Leon Carr J.

I like that idea also Michael, I know my favorite part of the group is meeting others who enjoy photography as much as I do.

I liked the assignment but I got there a few minutes late and didn't get to meet many of the members. I will arrive early next time so that I can introduce myself and get to know others, which is why I am here. Look forward to the next meetup and meeting more fellow photographers.

This question is for anyone- where's the "Good to see you" button? How do I do my "Good to see you"?- I know how to post comments- Log in and then you can post along side you name for a comment or picture you like-

    March 4, 2013

    • Brian B.

If you get the phone app for meetup you can check in to the event as "Here" and I can see all the Good to see you buttons but I was being anti social with my camera until we went to the pub so didn't get to meet that many of you. Always next time! Perhaps start the event at the pub? May be good to plan for St.Pats Parade :)

Hi, Martha. I'm still trying to figure out how to respond to Meetup comments....I did just respond to your comment about my picture of the front of the Cathedral. I did a quick Google search on "can iphoto reduce file size," and I saw a number of links, including this one: http://support.apple.... When you export an image, you can change the JPEG "quality". Try 70 to 80%. Like Lightroom, there are probably others ways to reduce the size as well.

      March 3, 2013

    • Richard D.

Hi, again, Martha. Just for your information.....I don't know what the file size limit is for Meetup postings, but the files I uploaded tonight were about 2.0 megabytes to 2.4 megabytes in size. This is the same as 2000 kilobytes to 2400 kilobytes. I have uploaded files as large as 5.0 megabytes to 6.0 megabytes, which is 5000 kilobytes to 6000 kilobytes. I know this can be confusing! So I hope you have some luck with the advice various people have given!

      March 3, 2013

  • Martha R.

Thanks Kathy- I had a good time!- How do I upload pics?- If the upload says my pic is too big?- Can I still upload it?- I have several that are too big to upload!- Martha

    1 · March 2, 2013

    • Johnny

make sure that the last 3 letters of the file says "jpg" and make sure the file size in in kilobites.to see this just click "properties and look under file size. if it's in megabites or mb it's too big and needs to be reduced to kilobites or kb.

      March 3, 2013

    • Kathy B.

Martha another option might be, download Picasa (it's a free program) and try opening then saving an image through there.

Is there a tour at 2:00 or should I get there earlier?

    March 2, 2013

    • Kathy B.

The tour is at 2:00, however, would encourage getting there a bit earlier :)

      March 2, 2013

  • Joe C.

When I went to the Cathedral Basilica to photograph it in February, I shot it entirely in natural light and got spectacular shots. The interior was well lighted. Admittedly, the exposures typically were 1/4 to 1 sec, but my tripod and cable release allowed me to get the shots. I would discourage any flash photography for several reasons: 1) the bits of glass that form the frescos are highly reflective, and use of flash would ruin not only your photos, but also those of your fellow photographers, 2) the ceilings are so high only an exceptionally powerful flash would produce an adequate shot 3) you will be much more satisfied with natural light set to the correct white balance.

See y'all there. I'm aiming at being there by 1:30.

    2 · March 2, 2013

  • Kathy B.

Should be a spectacular day today for visiting the Cathedral. Note that although the tour begins at 2:00, you're very welcomed to arrive earlier to wander around. See everyone there!

    March 2, 2013

  • Lori M.

I have an extra tripod that I will bring if someone wants to use - it is smaller but good. Don't forget your cable releases!

Richard I have a D600 too and just learned how to use this feature, hence my recommending it. :)

      1 · March 1, 2013

    • Richard D.

I wasn't originally quite sure what you meant by "delay timer" feature. I thought you just meant the self timer. So I started looking into it some more, and I saw those menu options. I do like using the mirror up feature a lot when taking longer exposure pictures on a tripod but just wasn't sure it could be used with the self-timer. Now I know it can be. Thanks a lot for recommending this!

Being it's supposed to be cloudy on Saturday, how dark to you imagine the interior of the Cathedral will be? I have never been inside of it, but some the photos I have seen led me to believe a tripod / monopod might be worth bringing. Thoughts?

    • Kathy B.

Hi Martha. So will share what Sister Donnally gave me for photo advice; don't use a flash. The ceilings and walls are covered with beautiful metallic tiles and you'll get quite a reflection and glare. That being said, I do have an extra flash that I can bring, but would recommend a low-light lens and tripod. :)
