St. Louis Skyline - Sunset (Eads Bridge)

Focus: Capturing the beauty of the Saint Louis Skyline at sunset, when the city lights up after dark.

Perfect for all skill levels. As the available light will gradually change, so will your need to study, learn, change camera settings. Other opportunities will present as we will shoot from Eads Bridge, such as using HDR, Light Trails from passing cars, interesting people, create starburst effect using the setting sun and/or reflections, create movement.

A tripod is 100% required for successful results. Walk away with amazing photos.

We will meet on the Illinois side in the casino parking lot. Park and meet next to the Metrolink entrance. We'll take the stairs to the Eads bridge. Look for buddy and make your way to the bridge.

Mostly, this is a lot of fun. Sunset is 8:02PM, so try to arrive by 7:30 to catch the setting sun and lighting variations.

Here's a photo from a previous outing: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=618626738147389&set=a.170173936326007.42011.169246969752037&type=1&theater

I am not sure how many of you know about the following photo ops in st Louis:
    1) St Louis reflection pond (South side)
    2) Alton/IL fireworks (it will be closer to July 4th)
    3) Star Trail (Alton/IL)

I have taken photos at the above locations and can be viewed here at http://karu.zenfolio.com/f1066982103

Kathy, thank you. Any suggestions/comments on photographing Alton or St. Louis fireworks? It will be an ideal event for a meetup group. Thanks

Northern lights viewing is very rare down here in St. Louis - it would have to be a pretty major solar flare and solar activity to reach this far south.

    But it is possible:

    http://stormhighway.com/blog2012/july1512a.shtml

If you really want to see Northern Lights - Fairbanks, Alaska is one of the better bets. Or somewhere in Canada.

Whew! My previous post was terrible--I tried to do it from an ipad....Here is a link that shows the strength of the Northern Lights. To see them in St. Louis, we'd probably need a Kp of about 8. http://www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm

I see. The. Trio of planets, but nothing about the northern lights. That one Might require an impromptu trip north. Although they have been fairly active the last few days

Thanks for the Tip!- I am always looking for the Photo Opt to capture the Northern Lights!- I have seen them Once in STL!- Usually the Planetarium/Science Center will let you know if it is a good night and about what time you can Possibly catch the Northern Lights!- The Northern Lights Rarely get this low to see in Missouri!-Often there is Too much city light!

I"m interested in finding other areas that are good photo ops for night photography (that are safe). Does anyone have any suggestions.

    May 24, 2013

    • Martha D.

I agree with everything Richard says. A couple of minor things you can do to help is to replace any straps that have name brands, take just one lens and carry a small camera bag (one lens will force you to be more creative instead of always thinking about which lens you might need). You can carry mace, they sell it at Bass Pro, and remember you can use your tripod as a weapon!!

      1 · May 25, 2013

    • Aly

THanks Richard and Martha. Right now all I have is one lens. and my camera bag looks like a small backpack but even that could cause someone some interest if they would want to steal something. I would be more inclined to bring another person along with me and probably avoid the weekends. (too many drunks on the weekends) And Mace is a good idea but if that doesn't work I have a decent punch, have long nails for poking and I bite hard. lol :) On another note...I was one of the last to leave on Thursday and a few people did ask me if there was a photography convention in town when I was walking back to my car ...so you are right...the camera equipment does attract attention.

This was my first meet up with you guys and I had a bast! Everyone was so nice and helpful. I did get some nice shots so I was happy! Thanks to Jody for carpool ride! I plan on joining in on many outings. One question, my husbands B's liked one of my photos and wants it in a conference room! What size are you able to enlarge to and maintain quality? I was shooting a Nikon 5100. Any suggestions? Thanks for a great experience!

    2 · May 24, 2013

    • Richard D.

Hi, Karen. I'm not exactly sure, but I will say that my first digital SLR was a Nikon D70, only a 6 megapixel camera. I've had prints from this camera blown up to 24x36" at a commercial photo lab and still have good quality. I think the 5100 is a 16 mega pixel camera, so you should be able to print this size or even larger. It will also depend, though, on how you actually shot it.....Large, Medium, Small, and what quality..fine, normal, or basic if you shot JPEG. If you shot RAW, none of this matters because you have all of the maximum data....but you will have to export the RAW file to a printable type file, like a JPEG. If your photo has good focus, I think you should be able to have it blown up quite large, but I'm just not sure what that might be....I do want to mention that word "focus" because if something is not in focus, you might not be able to see that if the image is small, but you likely will notice it if you blow it up to a larger size.

I know that there is a parking lot at that park near the observation structure. I planned on just passing there then moving my car to the casino around 7. I have a gray Grand Prix if you'll be looking for me.

Work is killing me, will see you guys at the next one. Hope weather holds out, looking forward to some outstanding shots

    1 · May 23, 2013

  • Pam P.

Presently there are a few sprinkles, but it's gradually moving south. If you're arriving 7 or later, you should be dry. For those who haven't visited Eads Bridge, wear walking shoes and it gets very windy up there and temps will drop this evening.

It looks like the clouds will be out in time to see the moon(depending on where you check the weather)- this will be added interests for your photos. Hope to see some familiar faces. I'll be there 630/645, I'll be the one with the camera (wink). Best parking is in the Casino Queen parking lot, closest to the Metro Link stairs. The Metro Link stairs will take you up to Eads Bride, where this is a sidewalk/walking area. For best photos, bring a tripod as you'll want to use long exposure.

    :-)

If it is raining do we just assume the skyline shoot will not be happening? This will be my first time attending a gathering so just wanting to know how it works. Thanks.

    May 23, 2013

    • Richard D.

Hi, Pat. I'm not exactly sure how things like this work....I've only been a member of this Meetup since last November. I think it is kind of up to the person who organizes this. I know of 1 or 2 other instances where a Meetup was cancelled or postponed because of rain, but I also know of another instance where the Meetup still took place, in spite of the rain. I don't want to speculate, but I would guess that because of the large number of people going to this one, it would be hard to completely cancel it and notify everyone. Some may show up, even if it is raining. I don't think the chances of rain tonight are really high, though.

Is anyone meeting up and caravan-ing over? I'm not really sure where to go once I cross the river.

    May 22, 2013

    • Matthew

      Which exit?

      May 23, 2013

    • Richard D.

Matthew, I go to Belleville often to visit my parents, but I never remember the name of the streets I pass! If you take Poplar Street, stay in the right most lanes xing the bridge. These will head to Route 3, but do not take Route 3 (Sauget). I believe the next exit after Rt 3 says Tudor Ave, E. STL, which goes off to the right. Don't take that one. The road will soon meet back up with 64, but at that point, keep going straight towards E STL. You will cross a railroad track. At the next big road past the track, turn left. This will take you under 64, and I believe at this point, you will have seen signs for the Casino Queen. Don't get back on the Eads Bridge....that will take you back to STL! Hope this isn't too confusing.
