Alton Fireworks on the Mississippi

Ooh, I like fireworks! Last year we were up on the hill next to City Hall, but this year let's try a different spot. Take a right off the Alton Bridge, another right onto Discovery Parkway and turn right into the park. The fireworks aren't until nine, but getting there early will help us secure a spot and get the best vantage point.

I'm planning on going to Fast Eddies at 4:45 and grab a byte to eat. Fast Eddies is ~6-10 block walk.

I think my son has convinced me to brave the madness that is Forest Park. I am, however, disappointed because I still don't know how to shoot night photos. Enjoy your evening, folks!

I sent this to Jerrianne and realized it could benefit all our members. It is the link to a DPS article on photographing fireworks. You can access it with your smartphone:

If it does not work out we should just go down to the rivers edge in the main parking lots or go to the city hall lot where we was last year.

    July 2, 2014

    • Richard S.

The Big Alton Bell Lots by the River. But you will have to be there very early.

      July 2, 2014

I am still planning on doing the original spot. I'm wondering if the parking lots by the dam are going to be open. If so then you could park there and walk down the dam.

Another possibility is parking right along route 143. Which is Riverlands way.

      July 3, 2014

  • Undrey C.

The Alton website states parking is available along Riverlands Way in West Alton (Missouri side of the Mississippi River). That's where I will be parking. So I won't be crossing the river to join you.

Soooooo...is it city hall or the Alton Belle then?

I'm going to stick w/ the City Hall location. I had good luck from that vantage point. Good luck everybody!

Is there a specific place in the park where we can plan to meet?

    July 2, 2014

  • Richard S.

PLEASE READ. I drove by the park today. They have posted thru out the park No Parking signs. Also it looks like they are going to be blocking the entrances to the park. There is an "Office / Factory across the street. Maybe we could park in there. If it is like last year, if you park to the north of the main drag you have to go thru town and get on I-255 and take it south to get out of there. On the other side of the bridge there is a fairly large lot that is on the river side. This might work out too. Also, I noticed that along 143 there was no indication that you could not park there. It may be though a state law that you can't park there. The spot to be looks like it make be a little down river from the park.

There is an entrance through the flood wall at the intersection of Cpl Belchick Memorial Parkway and and Hwy 143. You can get a good view of the bridge and river from there.

A quick question: as I change jobs, I'm losing access to all of the camera equipment I usually shoot on. I'm looking at this as a good thing as it means I can build a whole new kit from the ground up. Problem is, I'm stymied by all the choices. Canon vs Nikon. DSLR vs. mirrorless. Cheap body and more glass vs. expensive body and less glass. So the question is--what would you do if you were starting over from scratch? Are there any new cameras/systems out there that really blow your skirt up?

(I know this isn't on the topic of the event. Hope this is ok to post here.)

I'm with Megan, as well. If Nikon has right "feel" for you stick with it. Go to Schiller's and spend some time with the cameras. You may find that another Nikon fits your hand even better.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
