Lightroom Intensive Workshop

Hi Folks:

Well, the first available Saturday for the library meeting room is November 9, so I've booked the room for that day.  As with last time, I've booked the room from 9:00 - 5:30 to allow for setup, etc; the workshop will be begin at 9:30 and run until about 5, with a couple of minutes for lunch in there somewhere!  This will be essentially the same workshop as the one a couple of weeks ago, for those unable to attend the first one.  If anyone's interested in doing something more advanced down the road, we can see about that later.

Also as before, the basic requirement is that everyone pay a percentage of the booking fee.  If you want to give me money for the workshop, it will be accepted with gratitude.  For more details, see here: http://www.meetup.com/photo-613/events/134863402/

Mike.

P.S.  One thing that concerned several people last time was the idea that they have to have a laptop.  I'm almost sorry I mentioned it.  It's not a requirement; I just thought people would rather follow along on their own machines is all.  Also note that we will be covering a LOT of ground over the day.  I don't expect people to remember how to do everything, but in at least being made aware of what's possible, they can find out the 'how' of it as they progress.

I'm sorry to hear that so many couldn't be bothered to show up while I was on the waiting list. I appreciate that I got a spot at the last minute on Friday but was not checking my email to find out in time to attend on Saturday morning.

Thank you Mike for hosting and many of us certainy appreciated your efforts even if others didn't.

Mike, thanks very much for the outstanding workshop! It's a shame that so many didn't show up; they certainly missed out on a great opportunity.

Thanks to Mike for the valuable day-long session on Lightroom 5. Too bad there wasn't a way for us to pay in advance, which would help out with the no shows who had a negative impact on the viability of offering future sessions and stopped the waiting list from attending. Sincere thanks to Mike for generously sharing his extensive knowledge with us.

Thank you Mike for a great overview of Lightroom. Just what I needed to feel like I can fearlessly use and get competent with this fantastic tool.

Mike, Excellent workshop, very informative and clear - combined with your tutorials on your blog you are clearly a master of this tool - your command of the material was very impressive. I sincerely hope you weren't discouraged by the turnout.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the great workshop, Mike. The amount of material was challenging but I learned a lot. My only concern is the number of registered members who didn't show. This kept others on the wait list from being invited. Hope you made out OK financially with covering the room booking fee. Maybe there could be an easy to manage online deposit system for such cases?

Well, to the 50% of the group who actually showed up today, my thanks for your interest, your patience and your generosity. To the other half of the group who didn't bother to attend, all I'll say is that there was at least 1 other person waiting who might have appreciated the opportunity. However, since volunteering to give this workshop actually cost me money, I don't know that I'll bother to give any more.

    Mike.

    Next time though!

Much better, thanks. Years ago they'd warm up hypothermia victims and send them home. Finally, someone asked why so many of them dropped dead soon after. UVic did a whole batch of research and development of treatments and now there's a good protocol for treatment. It turned out that kidney failure and heart stress were the biggest problems. Anyway, I feel like I've been beaten with a bat, but I'm here to complain about it. The was a strong possibility that I wouldn't be.

At what point do those of us on the waiting list know we cannot attend? If the cutoff date for registration is Friday and there are already 15 or so waiting, I am to assume that I can make other plans? Perhaps next time you hold a session, those of us on the waitlist will get first dibs?

    November 5, 2013

    • Marcia and Mike Nelson P.

Hi Jennifer: The way the Meetup.com site works is that RSVPs are registered chronologically and if there's a limited attendance then those who RSVP after the list is full are put on a waitlist. If one of those attending cancels their attendance, then the first person on the waitlist is given an opportunity to attend and sent a notification from Meetup. Anyone is free to change their RSVP at any time, but such changes are also registered chronologically so if someone changes an earlier RSVP from No to Yes they'd be added to the waitlist.

In this case the workshop is limited by the room setup itself - the library meeting room in a classroom layout with tables for laptops can only accommodate a maximum of 22 people. I will make a list of those on the waiting list, and if we do this again (not likely before January), I'll give the people who were waiting the first opportunity to attend.

      Mike.

I will not be going to this very useful and interesting workshop. Family is in town and they want to go to Butchard Gardens on Saturday with me. Since I have been using Lightroom for over 3 years and I see a long waiting list, I think it is only fair to give my place up for someone fairly new to Lightroom. I'm not saying that I don't need a refresher course because I found it took me a year to learn my way around Lightroom. It is a rather complex program and I still could use some help with it, especially the new LR 5. I am still using 4.4. So, good luck with the course.

Thanks, Marilyn. If you have any questions about LR, feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to give you an answer. Also, there are about sixty or so tutorials related to photography on our blog that you're welcome to peruse if you like: http://www.wolfnowl.c... One post is a list of links to other sites that offer LR tips, tutorials, videos, presets, etc - over 200 different sites - so there's lots of information there. Is there any indication on how much the current % of the booking fee is per person?

    October 24, 2013

    • Marcia and Mike Nelson P.

Hi Andrew: The charge for the room is $147/ 21 attendees, so the base charge is $7/person. If people want to give me money it will be appreciated, but that's up to everyone to decide for him/herself.

what does it mean by the Sequel - I know a bit about lightroom but is this the second part?

    September 30, 2013

    • Marcia and Mike Nelson P.

Hi Heather: No, this will be basically the same as the last one, for those who were unable to make it. I say 'basically' the same as I work without a script, but we'll start assuming people know nothing about LR and go from there.

      September 30, 2013

  • Roy B.

I am new to Lightroom and found so much info the first time around that I might actually absorb it this second time ,... must be an age thing.
As long as there are not too many first timers I would love to do it again . I am a real sucker for punishment.

I am reading that LR 4 & 5 need a brand new computer to run them . So I would need to buy a new computer to run these programs? Vista and windows 7 both stink in my opinion. You need windows 8 to run LR5. Is this workshop worth taking if I were only to use LR 3 or photoshop 5. I will not support a company that shuts out older computers. So no new LR for me and I was going to purchase it for the workshop.

    September 28, 2013

    • Marcia and Mike Nelson P.

As far as a "new" computer, that depends. LR4/5 do require more resources than LR3. I had LR3 running on an older dual core processor with 4GB of RAM (but with shared video memory) and it was very slow. My new computer is a hyper-threaded quad core machine with 8GB of RAM running under Windows 8, 64-bit; when I can I'm going to up that to 16GB. It really depends on the size of the images you're processing and what you want to do with them. Unfortunately, unlike PS, LR doesn't make use of a GPU (graphics processing unit).

    • James Y.

Thanks for your speedy response and forgive the wording of the original post, I tried to change it once I read it but no edit feature is available. If you hit submit that`s it. LR 3 it is then with my minimalistice anticonsumer ways.

I am interested - I will try and purchase lightroom by then - thanks so much! Heather

    • Keith R.

Heather Adobe now offers you the chance to basically rent the entire CS6 package for $60.00 a month. This offers you the chance to have lightroom, photoshop etc.

      September 27, 2013

    • Marcia and Mike Nelson P.

Heather: You can either buy LR standalone or get it as part of Adobe Creative Cloud. If you have Photoshop CS3 or later you can get Photoshop CC an LR for $10/month. Whether or not you'd want to do that is up to you. You can also download and try LR free for 30 days, so if you want you can just download it before the workshop.

Any time other then Tuesday nights or Sunday afternoon please

    September 27, 2013

  • Marilyn W.

Thanks Mike. I'm debating whether to upgrade to LR5. I don't think my system could take it. Will be interesting to find out about though.

    September 27, 2013

    • Marcia and Mike Nelson P.

Hi Marilyn: LR5 does offer some advantages over LR4, but it requires Windows 7 or later or Mac Mountain Lion, I believe. LR5 does require more resources, though. There's a much bigger difference between LR3 and LR4 or 5 as the new process version (2012) dramatically changed the basic panel.
