Witty`s Lagoon nature walk at low tide.

Witty`s Lagoon is an estuary that is best visited at low tide. The Beach Trail is a 1.1 kilometer hike that takes you through a thick rainforest, an old orchard and then to the pebble shores of the Juan de Fuca Straight.

This is a short hike but encompasses all of the best sight and sounds of the region [160 recorded birds, waterfall, massive trees and ocean views]. Sitting Lady Waterfall are best photographed now with low foliage growth. I was told the trail has been redone and you can take a wheelchair down the path? Low tide is at 3:30 so we will be down at low tide when the birds and animals are most active.

I hope to make these nature walks every two week rotating Saturday and Sundays for the next few months.

Any suggestions please email me.

If people need a ride just ask for one. I am all for fewer cars on the road.

Oh, DG, I believe you didn't go far enough down the road to the Witty's Nature Centre, where we met. There is a sign indicating the Nature Centre turn-off on the Metchosin Road.

Ha - I got up this morning and see 3 sets of my pictures uploaded overnight. I had to go back in and delete the multiple copies. I guess patience is a virtue when it comes to the uploader :)

It was nice meeting the few brave souls who turned out this afternoon. Thank you James Y for hosting; this type of walk/hike/photo experience is great. I really enjoyed it!

The weather was a tad inclement, but the concept of getting the group together for an outside shoot is excellent. Very enjoyable.

this might be a naive question - i am wondering how to best protect my camera from getting wet?

    February 23, 2014

    • Richard L.

Thanks for asking this question; I've been thinking the EXACT same thing. A friend with an umbrella perhaps :)

Simple, cheap way to do it, I bought a 2-pack of these at one of the local camera stores, and I always keep them on hand: http://optechusa.com/...

Haha, Bev Anne said it well... for those reasons it's pretty unlikely that I'll make it out.

I have decided to pass on this adventure -- I just can't put rain, snow and even a short hike all into the same sentence with enjoyment. However, I am looking forward to seeing all the photos from those of you who brave the elements.

Looks like work is going to take priority after all. Have to pass on this one. Too bad.

    February 22, 2014

Work always takes priority that`s how the bills get paid. I have a few months off. Steve lets go and do some night photography sometime.

With the anticipated change in the weather (i.e.,snow), will this event be cancelled?

    February 21, 2014

    • James Y.

We had snow at the island View nature walk and everybody came so no. Sitting Lady Falls is a wonderful photograph with snow. The trail has been redone and is very easy I have been told.

I have to change my RSVP as I have a really bad cold and don't want to pass it on to any of you!

Anyone from the James bay area going that I could hitch a ride with? thx

Mychosin House is a good place to go for a beer or coffee, before or afterwards. Right at lunch time is not good. Prices are ok. as is the quality. Two hours is the minimum time to allow if you get into nature photographs. Time will really fly by, if the weather and critters cooperate.

    • James Y.

The sunset an hour later while the tide is still low could make for some nice photographs. Mychosin House is worth going to eat at just for the fries alone if I remember right?

I'd love to participate, but before I have to finish preparing the bags, because I'll be overseas a month and this weekend will be the last one before departure.

    Is anyone else offering rides?

    February 9, 2014

    • Richard L.

Bev Anne, I'm in View Royal, if that's near to you?

      February 10, 2014

    • Bev A.

Thanks for the offer, but I am in James Bay which is a bit far from you. I mainly need a ride home or at least to the downtown area.
