Rhododendrons in Playfair Park

If you haven't been there, Playfair Park has the most amazing azalea and rhododendron gardens Marcia and I have seen. We had a meet up there last year and people seemed to have a good time, so we should definitely go back again! From the looks of it, spring is, well, springing up all over Victoria and the flowers are starting to bud.  In addition to the rhododendron/ azalea gardens there is a Garry oak meadow and a long strip of other flowers along the north border of the park.

There are several ways to access the park, and parking on both the east and west ends.  There's a playground at the southwest corner of the park, and that's probably the best place to meet up to start with.  Bring your macro equipment if you like, and prepare to be enthralled!

If you're coming by bus, probably the best way is to take the #6.  There's a northbound bus stop just south of Rock Street and a southbound bus stop just south of that.  Head east on Rock St. and take the first left.

Flowers, people, cameras, sometimes it just works. Loved the flowers and the chat. Beautiful place that I had probably been by 1000's of time and didn't know existed. Good to see so many good people.

Excellent outing. Very friendly group of members. Exquisite rhodos and azaleas, which will probably remain worth seeing for a long time yet. Rain mostly dried up as the trip started (well done, Mike!)

Thanks to everyone for coming out! I'll look forward to seeing your images! I didn't get a chance to talk with all of the new people, but we'll get there...

Thanks so much, Mike, for arranging this meetup. I had no idea this park existed at all, let alone that it could be so lush. Definitely soul food, and a place I'll revisit.

I was asked to photograph someone's horses on that day. I'm waiting for a time, but it's looking like later in the afternoon. Maybe I might be able to make it out for an hour.

We went there on Sunday. The weather was partly cloudy, partly sunny, cold and windy so I set my little Fuji XPro 1 on automatic and sometimes macro. The images came out better than last year with my heavy Sony equipment.. This is just to let you know that the rhodos are in bloom and they are really healthy looking, like they have enjoyed the cold weather. Only one shrub was finished blooming all the others were fresh and/or about to bloom. The camas are in full bloom too. You will love it there. Have fun.

Anyone else want to do an early shift at 7 am with me in the morning light, then meet up later at 11 am with the main group and see what happens then? If it is cloudy not much point , BUT if it sunny, we can catch the magic of the early light and the dew on the blossoms. Timing is everything.

What time do you think would work best Twilight: 5:16
      Sunrise: 5:52
      Sunset: 20:29
      Twilight : 21:05

Well, you can't go wrong getting some place too early so, about 5:15 would probably be okay. With something on the night before, I'm not making any guarantees. :)

Alas - the sailing season is upon us also and I will be out on the wild blue seas with the wind in my hair, the rain in my face, gumboots on, my long underwear, four layers of clothes, and clutching an ever-cooling cup of tea.
