I was planning on picking up an umbrella for more versatile light for on location portrait shoots. It's my understanding they are quite affordable, which is perfect for me right now! What I'm after is the umbrella, and a stand. Any recommendations out there? I always prefer used over new...any brands I should look out for on ebay?

I have been looking at some sets on amazon.ca. I have been more interested in light boxes with stand and flash mount for around $69, but there are umbrellas with stand and flash bracket for $49...

I don't have any brand recommendations, but one thing to look for if you plan to use them outside at all, umbrellas act like sails with even the smallest amount of wind. If you think you would do this, try for one with a wider, heavier base. Bags can help weigh down a stand, so look for something that would be easy to rest or hang a bag on the base. The Strobist however has a recommendation on light stand, and he's one to know.

Nathan beat me to it, but http://www.strobist.b... and also http://www.joemcnally... would be places to look for lighting tips on equipment.

Thanks for the tips everyone, especially the wind issue Nathan, something I hadn't considered yet.

I've mentioned this before on here but when it comes to gear, I don't use "very often" but need, I always check out dx.com (http://dx.com/c/camer.... They have so much stuff and yes it's always FREE shipping world wide. Friends and I have bought thousands of dollars worth of merchandise over the years with NO issues.

Just looked at some YongNuo stuff there. They're selling for just over half of what YongNuo Canada is selling the same stuff for and they're 20-30% cheaper than amazon.ca. And free shipping.

Thanks for that link, Andrew!

No personal experience, but have heard from two photographers that Cheetah Stand makes great stands, softboxes, and umbrellas that are easier than usual to set up and take down, as well as being sturdy. In both cases, the photographers were using this brand. http://www.cheetahsta...

No problem Steve... enjoy spending some money ;-)

p.s. Shipping times can vary by a large factor sometimes. I've bought one item for $1.79 and it took two weeks to arrive... just bought several android gaming tablets totaling $300ish and they got here in three days. All free shipping! Whoop!
