September 2nd marks the celebration of the 17th Fete de Ganesh by the temple Sri Manicka Vinayakar Alayam in the 18eme. Ganesh is a Hindu diety who is worshiped as the lord of beginnings and as the lord of obstacles. He is also the patron of arts and sciences, as well as the god of intellect and wisdom!! He is normally represented as a multi-armed human figure with the head of an elephant.
The temple celebrates with a morning of ceremonies and then a parade through the quartier. Our group has attended this festival for five years now and it is always a spectacular photo opportunity. I am sure that this year's parade will be a colorful event as well! More info can be found here: http://www.templeganesh.fr/fetegan.htm
Two notes: I would recommed that you bring a minimum of equipment as the streets will be *very* crowded and you will be jostled. Also, the parade monitors will yell at you if you step into the path of the parade wearing shoes. This is because the way is cleansed for the procession of the idol representing Ganesh. The parade participants walk the route barefoot. For the slighty less adventurous, wearing socks permits you jump into the route and potentially avoid rusty bottlecaps and shards of coconut shell :-)
Let's meet around 10h00 at Metro La Chapelle (Ligne 2) - exit north towards the small park. ***Please note that this is *NOT* Metro Porte de la Chapelle on ligne 12!!! We will walk north towards the temple on rue Pajol. The religious ceremonies begin in the temple at 09h00 and the parade starts at 11h00. I hope you can join us!
