Annual Photografriends Cherry Blossoms at Fairmount Horticultural Center

I'm ready for the end of winter and the beginning of spring when the Cherry Blossoms bloom.  This date is tentative, but this is an event that only happens once a year.

This is one of the very few days of the year that I will move my entire schedule to catch this.  It only takes one rainstorm or windstorm to rip the blossoms from the trees.

When the Cherry Blossoms explode, the color is amazing. If we can time the shoot with the Blossoms and some stunning skies, the results will be amazing...

I'm thinking that with the mild winter, the Cherry Blossoms will be early this year.  Possibly the end of March, but we should have about a weeks notice.  I will be there at sunrise and have my favorite shots done before the meetup.  Anyone else is welcome to accompany me on my early shoot.

Last year, we had some fog for this and it was better than I could have imagined.  Feel free to ask me any questions during this meetup to help you get your best shot!!!

This is our own annual Photografriends Cherry Blossom Festival!!!

Hello Everyone - being a 'Newbie', I did get the opportunity to go on Saturday morning to the Cherry Blossom shoot....and saw alot of shutter bugs running around into their craft. I have to say a special 'thank you' to Capn Scott for putting this meetup together - I enjoyed it immensely. My only regret is that I didn't meet everyone. I wasn't sure where everyone met afterwards and didn't see anyone grouped together when I was done, so I just went my merry way home. :)
Perhaps on the next venture out with the group, I will introduce myself to as many people as I can find. Looking at the amazing l pictures up on the site, I have to say - there are no amatuers here. I will post the pics I shot as soon as I can. Thanks again for a beautiful day. See you soon - Cheryl

Hi Cheryl. I'm a newbie too. I only talked to Bahrat and Capn Scott. Both were extremely nice. I wish I would have met more people too. It would be nice if we had an outing like that if some people could meet for lunch afterward and talk about what they liked best and how they photographed things.

I'm all for that - lunch, discussion, sharing, meeting everyone. That would be great.

I think it is safe to say... we have enough content for a book. lol.

is there a deadline for this?

      April 16, 2013

Jill: try downloading Picasa. It's free - and I believe you can resize photographs using it. [I'm not 100% sure, since I haven't used it in years] But, either case, it's a nice program to help organize your photos and it won't cost you anything.

    HI EVERYONE-
GOOD IDEA ABOUT MEETING AFTER OUTING TO DISCUSS THE EVENT. I'M AVAILABLE... JUDY

    April 17, 2013

  • Jill

I was very excited. I can't wait for the next outing. Maybe a few of us can meet up afterward and discuss what we liked best and why we chose that view of the picture. Thank you again Capn Scott for setting this up. I'm sure it's a lot of work to run this, but I'm glad you do, because I enjoyed myself a lot! I joined to South Jersey Photo Group 2 years ago and have yet to go to an outing with them. I hope they are as friendly and kind as you all are. : )

I have tons of pictures that I am working on. When done I will post mine. I am surprised how well they turned out despite that it was the first time I used my new Nikon D90 and didn't have a clue about what to do. Of course Adobe Photoshop helps.

Beautiful, breathtaking. First time for me to be there and unforgettable.

fun, even though my pictures turned out crappy for the most part. However, this is part of being a beginner. I really need photography 101 at this point. I had a great time and it was so beautiful and fun meeting all of you and will surely be back for another shoot. I might invest in a photography class at Bucks or with a private tutor. I'm seriously photographically challenged. I do want to go to the light house meet tomorrow, though- if I can get a ride.

Thanks guys. Today, I slept until 8 a.m. and did not want to get out of my slumber. However, I want to go on more shoots and more interesting stuff. I wanted to do the pregnant nude, but I didn't have the time or the transportation. I was just getting aquainted with the group. I like portrait photos the best, so I hope to get involved somehow in that.

I have no clue where to go, where are we going to meet everyone? Is there an address I can punch in my GPS? This is my 1st meetup and I Am not very familiar with Philly.

I had a great day and stayed in town for a long time. Got some shots behind the Art Museum as well. Thank you Scott. It was nice meeting you. I am looking forward to another creative meetup.

I had a fun time and met some nice people. Looking forward to pulling my skills and taking better shots. However, for the noobs, there will be an intimidation factor. Some people showed up with expensive gear. Feel comfortable with at least any DSLR.

I can't wait to do this again! Hopefully the blossoms will cooperate next year where we don't have the tents and other set up in the way. Nevertheless, I still got good pictures.

Ok gang - I'm going to come out tomorrow morning with everyone. I aim to be there around 6am, because I am notorious for getting lost.

I have a question, Scott. I have never been here (disgraceful, I know). So I pulled up google's satellite maps to view where the back entrance was.... and can't seem to locate it. I see the Pls Touch Msm, but can't actually see any gates. So I have no idea where to go. Can you tell me where that back gate is in relation to the Pls Tch museum? (Just enough so that I have a place to aim the truck) I'll find the Hort Center once inside. Also: in case anyone in the group is interested... there is apparently a good chance we will see the 'northern lights' down in the PA region Sat night. I'm taking a drive out to French Creek park to ensure I get the darkest skies possible, and pack'n the camera.

    April 12, 2013

Patricia, that would be awesome. Not sure how long I'm staying, but it would be nice to see.

      April 12, 2013

Aim the truck close and call me if you still don't see it...

I'm not to familiar with my T2i, either- except that I've gotten some great pics with it. From the sounds of it, I'm sure we can help each other out. I plan on bringing my manual with me just in case.

    April 13, 2013

Going really early to do some light painting hopefully will see you all there!

Hey just want to check. I don't remember what it said when I signed up. Is there a cost for this as I want to have that with me and do we need to pay for parking? Hoping to get there between 6:30-7:00 to get some sun rise shots.

    April 12, 2013

    • Chi L.

Here's where I parked last time. It's near the rear entrance:[masked],[masked]

Scott, is there any number we can reach anybody who will come in early so we can catch up who ever will come in late....its also good to learn some tips on how to capture good pics and great locations for taking pics specially from people who knows the place well....thanks

    April 12, 2013

  • Clark L.

i still have work the night before so ill be in maybe around 8:30-9....it seems that some people will be in early morning so if anyone wants to meetup at the site around 8:30-9 let me know...lets roam around together....see everyone tomorrow

    April 12, 2013

  • Elaine W.

If the park does not open until 7 a.m. will parking be available before this time? Also if we do arrive by 6:30 will we be able to start our shoot?

    April 12, 2013

    • Capn S.

Typically the back gate is open. Otherwise, there are a bunch of great places to shoot around the center until the gates open. Parking is always available.

I am so bummed out because I can't go this Saturday. I have to work and can't get anyone to cover my shift. Ugh. I am going to have to go maybe late in the day...maybe around 6pm.

    • Capn S.

We'll be there at sunrise if that's possible for you...

      April 12, 2013

My backyard white cherry blossom tree is in full bloom. I was only able to shoot with my Canon G12. Did some shots trying to catch the bumble bees that were flying all over the tree late afternoon. I think I succeeded two or three times. They are fast so I had to have lots of patience. I also learned that they are actually very shy. Will post pics another day.

With almost 90 people participating in this, I wonder if we should compile a nice coffee table book for the group's annual get together???
