Star Trails - High Knob Overlook

  • Jun 8, 2013 · 9:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Shooting stars needs to be in a very dark place.  We will travel 3.5 hours from Philly to a scenic overlook that has some of the darkest skies around.  This will be a late night event on a new moon.

Some of us will be booking hotel rooms to be able to stay out for a while shooting the stars and galaxies.  We will meet at the studio and travel/carpool to the area.  Bring your wide angle lens and your tripod.

Here are some of the google image searches on this area - https://www.google.com/search?q=high+knob+overlook&safe=off&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=yWJ1UcDbMari4AO_hIGQCg&sqi=2&ved=0CDgQsAQ&biw=1920&bih=995

If you hike up past the porta-pots to where the big boulders are, you can get on top of the really large one which faces the overlook and get some really good shots that will have foreground and background interest. I can just imagine native americans being up there - it's so lovely. Jane

I am sooo very sorry I missed this. All the pictures are absolutely beautiful. Great job everyone. I'll be near the Blue Ridge Moutains in Virginia in 2 weeks, maybe I will find a spot to be able to take pics like this. Any advice other than a wide angle lens? Shutter speed and aperature advice? Any filters needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated! : )

    July 7, 2013

    • Chris

No filters. You should be able to get great views from the mountains.

Will have to do this again when the weather cools back down, in the fall.

    June 9, 2013

    • Chris

For me, lower ISO to 1600 or 2000 and stick to 30 sec exposures. Reading is good but best way to learn is to experiment.

I would love to try and do this in the fall. Chris, you just answered the question I asked. I'll learn to read all before asking questions. Scott, lots of lenses to learn about, I never knew that existed. To add to the dinner, you must have dessert. I'm told I bake some really good stuff. If I'm able to go next time, I will bake stuff for all coming. Brownies and vanilla cupcakes with brownie in the middle. : )

It was great to learn more about star photography and what a treat to be able to see the Rings of Saturn from the astronomers that were there with their massive setup!

I need to send a big thank you to Bill for the gin n tonics, chair and food. I need to send a big thank you to Chris Riley for the ice and subs!!! I can't think of too many things that would make the next time better. It'll be hard to top this one!

Had to decide last night whether to keep my room or not. Also been a REALLY long work week. Next time I guess.

    June 8, 2013

Watch the pictures Tony, you have to do this the next time. There was also a group of Astronomers with their scopes showing us Saturn (with the rings) and other stuff...

Why would shots on Friday night be unacceptable. I am quite sure I could not tell the difference? Bill

    June 4, 2013

    • Capn S.

On the new moon is the darkest time. Also, I put it on Saturday because of the distance. And, if I'm going to drive that kind of distance I'd like to make sure I get the best bang for my buck.

      June 4, 2013

  • Capn S.

I put in an order for some good weather. I'll wait until Friday before I make a decision as to cancel or not...

    June 3, 2013

    • Bujor

if cancelled this has to be rescheduled exactly 28 days ahead... July would mean the Milky Way at least an hour earlier above our celestial North heads... even better, between 1 and 3am!

      June 4, 2013

  • judy d.

I'm also worried about the weather... Too long a drive to get disappointed.. So, Scott see what you can do!! Talk to the higher up for a clear day... :-)

Will I need a telephoto lens as well as a wide angle lens? I guess we will wait to see the weather. Yes, I could sleep in my car. I will decide on Friday. Thank you for the info. : )

Wow, this is a 4 hour drive for me, one way trip. I can't really afford a hotel room at this time. I think I am going to have to pass this time. Darn it! I really wanted to to this! I even borrowed a wide angle lens from my brother. This makes me very sad.

    June 3, 2013

    • Bujor

Jill, you can sleep in your car, you will not be the only one doing this. The only real problem will be the weather. If there will be any clouds at all, any astronomical event is truly compromised. So, let's just keep a close eye on the weather channel for now, because forecast doesn't look too bright for next weekend...

      June 3, 2013

    • Capn S.

Hi all - am unavailable for this High Knob shoot but know the area very well. Look for Eaglesmere, PA on Rt 42 - lots of places to stay ( some a little pricey, some not ) but very convenient to High Knob and Worlds End State Park. All of Sullivan County is beautiful. Jane

I'm so upset. I just learned that I have to be on call this weekend. The location is too far away for me to manage both work and play. :( I hope everyone has a great time, can't wait to see the pictures. Sorry to anyone who I would have driven. :(

    Is anyone carpooling from philly?

    May 27, 2013

  • Tony F.

For those who are crashing overnight, where are folks staying?

    May 27, 2013

    • Bujor

I don't know about others, but I'll be up from 2 to 4, when the Milky Way is over the head... my car is just fine for the remaining 2-3 hours of napping...

      May 27, 2013

    • Bujor

I would like very much to meet with the others, but, besides the coordinates, where I will be, probably starting at 8-9pm, I don't see any efforts to coordinate anything... soo, I guess it'll be fine anyway.

The day couldn't be chosen better! On June 8, 2013, the Moon is totally "absent" from the nightsky:

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hiO7EMV-JtY/UY8f4Gb7eII/AAAAAAAAEb4/RNhKBtWMq6Q/s1600/Untitled-1.jpg

The Milky Way would be straight above, upon the Celestial North at 4:00 am DS Time, that means we'll have 2-3 good hours to shoot it before that wee hour:

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cj2sXzjESfs/UY8jj9gFNRI/AAAAAAAAEcI/fxt9x-F-0_k/s1600/DSC_4977.jpg

Add to that that the location is a "Black Bortle Zone", and we are really in business. Let's all pray for a perfectly clean sky, with no clouds.

Any confirmed time to leave Philly? I will be leaving the morristown nj area at about 1:30pm to head directly to shoot location if the timing works out. If not, I guess I will come back home to Philly and carpool with the group.

Oh, I don't care what I have to do, I'm not missing this!!!! Any suggested telephoto lens? 70 - 200mm perhaps? My birthday is 5 days before, maybe I can get everyone to pool their money for my gift to be this lens. LOL!!!

Williamsport will be a good place to stay, close by with plenty of hotels and restaurants. For the adventuristic photogs, I believe you can camp over night in the State Park.
