Star Trails - High Knob Overlook

  • High Knob Overlook

UPDATE: The moon will set at 10:49pm.  Though, only 8% is showing.  That might be interesting to get a small sliver in the sky as well.

Shooting stars needs to be in a very dark place.  We will travel 3.5 hours from Philly to a scenic overlook that has some of the darkest skies around.  This will be a late night event on a new moon.

Some of us will be booking hotel rooms to be able to stay out for a while shooting the stars and galaxies.  I might bring my RV.  We will meet at the studio and travel/carpool to the area.  Bring your wide angle lens and your tripod. Or, even better, rent a bright wide prime (e.g. 24mm f1.4) for this event.

Some of the photos from our last excursion to High Knob are here - http://www.meetup.com/photografriends/photos/15396822/

Did anyone go? If so how did the pictures turn out?

Since it looks like meeting up at the studio to carpool isn't going to work out, is there anyone going from Philadelphia or nearby with whom I might catch a ride? Thanks.

I'm moving the studio on Saturday. I won't be able to make it...

What time is everyone meeting at the studio to head to this location? I will need to just follow as were coming as a family. Also need to know where the studio is. Or would it be better to meet at the location, I can put the cords in my GPS.

I may go this weekend instead of next just to catch the meteor shower. Is there an address of some kind to get to Highknob Overlook where you all meet up or can someone give me directions please? That would be much appreciated.

    May 21

    • Jill

Thank you Dave K and Walt. I might just head down the shore to catch it instead. Wildwood is having a night time kite illuminating event. I will have my son, so it may be hard to travel all the way to PA and sleep in the car. He might not like that too much. Thank you for all your help, it is greatly appreciated!!!

Khurt- your decision is a good one. If you were in a crisis situation, a good hospital close by would not be an option up there. Are you on the omnipod? My 10 yr. old granddaughter was diagnosed 7/2/12 - but she lives in NewHampshire and so I'm not hands-on familiar with emergency treatment. The pump has really increased her quality of life. Jane

  • Khürt W.

Sorry. I won't make this one. I have Type 1 diabetes and I'm just not comfortable traveling hours anyone who knows what to do if I have an emergency.

Sorry to say I have to cancel this weekend. :( I was looking forward to it- and even had a hotel booked & ready for our weekend adventures. What a shame.

Eaglesmere Inn and the Crestmont Inn at Eaglesmere, Sullivan County PA are two places I have experience with - they are both wonderful. Williamsport (maybe 45 min away from the shoot as the crow flies ) is currently enjoying a renaissance but Eaglesmere has amazing history and a 10,000 yr. old glacier lake along with pure natural beauty. It is "the town that time forgot". Eaglesmere is about 20 - 30 minutes from High Knob. If my husband agrees to go with me, we'll be staying in Eaglesmere. The Loyalsock runs through and the World's End State Park are very near and the views of the Endless Mountains are stunning. There used to be an "airport" there and in the 1920's the "rich and infamous" would fly up there from NYC and gamble and drink etc. There is a catholic church up there - St. Francis of Assisi" that is …………. . . . . . . Am so wanting to go to this shoot. Jane

Wow Jane, thank you so much! You even threw in some places that I would love to see. You rock!!!

      April 15

  • Walt

Where is everyone staying? Williamsport is about 45 mins for the overlook.

Eaglesmere Inn on Mary Ave just off main road Rt. 42 - this is beautiful and not real pricey and meals are included. Sullivan County real estate businesses will have more offerings.

Hi - am trying to talk my husband into this shoot. He's not a photographer but he LOVES Eaglesmere and we'll be a stone's throw away. And, there are charming overnight places to stay. High Knob is a favorite place for me. Very special. We've been trekking up there since 1972. I love it. World's End State Park is also wonderful. It's up to the universe. Jane

    April 10

    • Jill

Hi Jane. Is there a place you can recommend in case I want to stay overnight?

      April 11

  • Patricia B.

I won't be able to carpool with you guys. But I'll be going (unless something goes wrong). Is there a description of the meeting place? coordinates? I'll be coming from another location (not in Philly) and need to find you guys. :)

So are you guys still going to do this? If so what time would you be leaving and estimated time of coming back? I am definitely interested. If someone had a spot for me my camera and a blanket that would be awesome. Considering the timeframe.

This has been rescheduled to March 29th...

      January 30, 2014

The road is ice with a snow covering. It's too dangerous in this condition. We will need to move the date...

If this happens I will be driving and have room for two . I am leaving 19053 around 1 PM so I can catch the sunset over the valley.

Hey Walt, if its good weather I'll ride with you. We can talk about Friday night at the studio.

      January 27, 2014

I know it's a week away, but I just checked weather for Hillsgrove. Does not look so great. Crud, it is supposed to be warmer that day. Twenty degrees as a low is like a heat wave!

Is the weather going to be okay to shoot? It looks like it is going to be partly cloudy Saturday night.

    November 28, 2013

    • Capn S.

I'm waiting until tomorrow to make that call. It's not looking very good right now, but it's looking better than it did yesterday. Three hours is a long drive to look at clouds in the dark...

      November 28, 2013

    • Walt

Well if this falls thru maybe we can go to Peddlers Village and shoot some Christmas lights.

What time are you leaving the studio?

    November 27, 2013

How's the weather look for Saturday ???

    November 25, 2013

  • John M.

Hey Scott. I'm an advanced amateur astronomer also. If I can swing this trip, I'll bring a large telescope as well as my Canon set ups. Could help attendees know what they were looking at. But I'm not a camper.

    November 22, 2013

    • Capn S.

There are typically several astronomers with large trailers and giant scopes at these. They are also happy to show off their telescopes. You will be in good company.
