Lightzone - Free Photo Editing Software

We reviewed LightZone several years ago when it was sold by Lightcrafts - but they since stopped selling LightZone and it was pulled from the shelves. Recently LightZone was 'saved' and has since been released as fully open source software ... and that means it is Free.

It is not as powerful as Photoshop, and similar in many ways to Aperture and Lightroom ... but again, it's now free which is a huge bonus.

Instructions:

1. Register: http://www.lightzoneproject.org/

On the main page of the website there is a box on the right that says "User Login." Click "Create new account" and provide your username and email. Then, just follow the instructions that are emailed to you.

Note: I suggest everyone register on the site and download the software.  You should go get it sometime this week instead of waiting till the week of the event, since registration is required and they have a manual approval process, you'll want to give them some time to get to you.

2. Download

After you are approved you will be able to log in to your account and download the software. Depending on when you register, this could take several days.

3. Bring photographs

If you would like to follow along with your laptop, be sure to bring some photographs to work on!

Pizza?:

The last time I had this event, people were hungry so we ordered some pizza. If you are interested in having a pizza dinner at this event - please let me know in the comments below. If enough people are interested, I'll order some pizzas and everyone who's eating can pitch in to cover the costs.

Parking:

Free parking is available on E Walnut St. (behind the building)

To see the parking map larger: http://www.meetup.com/photographers/photos/18631122/#[masked]

See you there!

George: Can you or anyone else refer me to someone among your circles who can advise me on downloading Lightzone on my desktop to get past the security. I don't even know what security I have. I deleted Microsoft security, but I think Dell might have something. I had a technician out here but I think he is tired of me. Whatever he did, did not work.

Hello Loyce, unfortunately the possibilities are very nearly infinite. I don't think there's any reliable way to give good advice remotely in a situation like this. Hopefully your experience with it on the laptop will provide some insight into your desktop experiences - I know of no legitimate security configurations that wholesale prevent software installation like you're describing, so I am not sure where to suggest you being.

Very informative and convincing presentation for the time we had available. I would like to see more and have us work along too.

Don't know whether it is me or the fact I am trying to move over to Apple from PC, but I have been unable to download the software. Followed all of the directions, but can't activate download successfully. Keeps directing me to an unrelated third party site. Since I am unable to download the program I don't think I would be able to add to the group, nor would I be able to take much away. Regretfully I am going to drop out of this meeting, but hope to participate in the future.

I'm sorry you are having difficulty. You should still come, and we can figure it out together! :)

Sorry that you're having troubles! We'll touch on the site during the beginning of the meetup, so if you want to join in still, there's probably plenty to cover and learn. If not, we'll see you next time.

George: I downloaded Lightzone sometime ago. When I checked it tonight, it says the trial has expired and I need a number to continue. Will I be able to download it again on my laptop.

    January 23, 2014

    • George F.

Hello Loyce. It sounds like you got a copy of the previous release, the newer versions available and released by the Lightzone Project do not require license keys. However, yes, you should be able to install the program on a different computer (your laptop) and go from there. We'll take a look at the site during the meeting to help people find the most current releases.

How late are we planning on being together?

When i downloaded the program, approx 8 different "downloads" came in. Do i need to address each one? I did the top one , loaded successfully and i am able to open the program.

I will probably try to wrap the structured part of the meeting around 8 or 8:30. The space doesn't 'close' really, so there's no urgency to leave, we've had meetings with a few people staying till 10 working on things together.

Hey everyone! Have you followed the registration instructions for the Lightzone software? If not, be sure to do so today! See you all on Friday.

I replied so long ago that I don't know if I received a confirmation if I need one. I do see Light Zone on my desktop. Do I need to download something else on the laptop.

No food for me. I am not coming from work. home all day, so I will make my own dinner. I am pizza'd out.

Is this a private invite for pizza. I have not seen this before.

    January 20, 2014

    • George F.

Hi Loyce - we're asking about food so we know approximately how many people might choose to arrive hungry. Our group frequently orders food for our meetings at the tech center.

Did I miss something. I have been looking for an email on downloading the program. Yes, i did the registration. Has everyone else already received and downloaded the program?

    January 7, 2014

    • George F.

Hi Mark, it does take their admins a little time to approve folks as they still do this manually. If you've waited more than a day, there's a thread on their forums you can post into for followup. I'd give it two days, it will probably show up. (Although I had to request it manually, I was signing up during a flurry of activity in October and they missed my registration somehow.)

Hello Mark and George, I've successfully downloaded the program. I feel good all I have to do is follow along to learn.
