Shooting Fast Action Martial Arts / Dance III

Hi everyone ~ Fabiano wants us back and he wants us back on a regular basis.  Once again, he is opening his studio for us to shoot.  The last time we got some great photos and learned quite a bit.  I am going to limit this meetup to 8 photographers in order for us to collaborate during the shoot.  Let's experiment with our off camera flashes this time around and look for freezing some of the action.

Please read the entire post as it has everything you will need to get there.  I will be sending my cell phone contact info to all of the attendees the night before this meetup starts.

This meetup is sure to fill up.  So, RSVP early.

Here's a link to the last meetup.

Fabiano was generous enough to offer his studio and his students in order for us to learn a bit about shooting fast action movements.  This meetup is for both experienced and beginner photographers.  There will be room for off camera lighting (flashes on light stands) and I will offer a very quick primer on shutter speed as it relates to aperture, ISO and your flash.  Anyone who has a flash hot shoe on their camera will be welcome to share my off camera lighting setup via my cybersync remote control.  Or, if you shoot Nikon, we can experiment with CLS (Creative Lighting System) the Nikon native off camera flash remote control.

Let's gather at 6:30 and be ready to shoot for an hour or so at 7PM.  We can all share a meal afterward for those of us who want to discuss the night's shoot and get to know each other a bit better.  I am going to limit this class to 8 photographers but will open it up to more if there is more interest.  I will definitely add more room for experienced photographers that want to share their knowledge with the group.  Please feel free to bring a guest.

This is a free form shoot, but some instruction will be provided.

Fabiano's Origainal Post (edited by JN):

My name is Fabiano, I just joined this meetup group.

Quick intro: I used to be a Graphic Designer/Photographer, but I have been "out of the game" for about 12 years now. I have decided to go back to photography more in the amateur level.

My major goal is to make better pictures/small videos of my sport, but of course, capture those priceless moments in life as well with family, vacation, nature, etc...

I teach a Martial Art called Capoeira. It is very different because it involves music, so it can be perceived as if we are dancing. The instruments and set up is very unique! Definitely a wide range of possibilities for creative photographers!

We could set up a meetup at my studio at no charge. I would notify my students and you would all be welcomed!

Classes/performances normally takes 1 hour, but we can extend that if the interest is high.

Here is a video of what I am talking about (we don't have this many people in class though):

Please Note: I am NOT trying to advertise or expend my business in any form. I will NOT try to sell my classes to anyone unless it is requested. That is not my primary goal!

All I want is to give the opportunity to photographers so they can shoot something unique for their portfolio. Also it would give me an opportunity to exchange ideas for the best photo composition of this type with other photographers, since that is the real reason I'm coming back to photography anyway.

We are located close to the intersection of Atlantic Ave, and E. Millbrook Rd in North Raleigh.

You can check the location here:

This is an important note for those who will drive there:

The physical address is 2210 East Millbrook Rd, HOWEVER, you will NOT see the building from the street!

Best way to get there is through ATLANTIC AVENUE. You might want to tell your GPS to search for SONIC BURGER instead.

Make a turn as if you are going to Sonic's Drive Thru THEN you will see a brick building in the back in the right side. The sign on top says "Martial-Arts - Aikido"

Nice to see that I wasn't the only one that has issues with the lighting. :-)

Are we allowed to place the photos in our portfolio?

So, far the only thing that is asked of us when we shoot is that we post our best photos up to the meetup, so Fabiano can use them how he wants. If there is a particular photo you would like to put in your portfolio, I don't think it would be that big of a deal, unless of course you were going to license it commercially. Then, I would suggest getting a release from all of the subjects photographed.
