Scott Kelby's 7-Point System for CS3 just came out.  I haven't even had time to look at it but the claim is, that once you learn the 7 major points, you can modify any photo. 
 I upgraded from Elements 5 to CS3 and they gave a bonus...one of the choices is a month at Lynda.com.  Looks like it's the one I'm going to choose.
