Chabot Space Center:
Dinner, A Movie and The Universe!

There is a dark moon on Saturday,
November 6th that should be better
for stargazing...

There have been some changes here and there are also several options to choose from. http://www.chabotspac...

General Information

Please remember to buy your tickets for this event if you're planning on attending. You can purchase tickets for General Admission either online or by phone. You will also need to make dinner reservations by phone, regardless of whether you bought your tickets online or not. The phone number for both purchasing general admission tickets and for making dinner reservations is: (510) 336-7373. The General Admission tickets costs $14.95 for each adult and covers the price of two shows at the Chabot Space Center. Dinner is purchased separately and at the restaurant for $18.00 per adult. More detailed pricing to be found below, including extras for drinks purchased at the restaurant. *******************************
Options and Changes

It turns out that the start time for this event is 6pm, regardless of whether we would be having dinner at 6pm or at 8pm. It is recommended that we show up approximately 20 minutes beforehand - which is why I changed the start time for this event to 5:45 pm. (not wanting to overdo it by making the start time a half hour earlier...)

While there is no rule that you must stay with the group for the Bay Area Physics and Astronomy Society, if you do want to sit together as a group, I'll need a final guest list for how many people want to sit together for BAPAS for dinner at least a day before the event, though I would prefer to have a final guest list at least a couple days beforehand. Also be aware that the 6pm dinner time is more popular and it may not be possible for us to all sit together at that time.

Since most people have already signed up for the 8pm dinner time, I'll leave that as our official time and then our schedule would be as follows:

6:00pm - Mysteries of Egypt (Theater Show)
7:00pm - Tales of the Maya Skies (Planetarium Show)
8:00pm - Dinner
7:30-10:30 - telescope viewing (weather permitting)

The other thing I like about this schedule is that it allows the maximum amount of time for telescope viewing (if we have clear skies). The alternative schedule looks as if we'd only be able to squeeze in maybe a half hour or less of telescope time either between the dinner and the show or after the shows. The disadvantage of this schedule is that 8pm is a bit late for eating dinner… and some might prefer the show options for the 6pm dinner time.

But you do have the option of choosing the 6pm time as well. Just fill out the questionnaire and let me know what options you are choosing and whether you'd want to sit together for dinner or not.

So if you choose to go for dinner at 6pm, here is what your possible schedule looks like:

6:00pm - Dinner
8:00pm - SolarMax (Theater Show) or Dawn of the Space Age (Planetarium Show)
9:15pm - Tales of the Maya Skies (Planetarium Show)
7:30-10:30 - telescope viewing (weather permitting)

If we do sit together for dinner, there will only be one check for the bill. Here's some extra information provided by the Chabot Space Center on our dinner arrangements, including the pricing for dinner and extras not included in the dinner price:

Dinner Arrangements and Pricing Information

Because you are organizing this event as part of a group, we ask that you call us no later than November 5th in order to confirm how many people are part of your group. This way we can arrange to have a table that will accommodate your entire group. Also, your waiter that evening will bring you a single check for your entire table, so please make sure that your group is prepared for that. I would recommend that everybody bring cash. If they forget to bring cash, there is an ATM available on the premises. Here are the prices so everybody can plan ahead: Dinner: $18/adult
$12/children (different menu) Drinks: : $5/glass for wine
$6/glass for cabernet
$25/bottle for wine
$30/bottle for cabernet
$5/bottle corkage fee if you bring your own alcohol
$4/glass for beer
$2/glass for soda, coffee, tea, etc. Please let me know if any of this is confusing or if you have any further questions. You can call our box office at[masked] to speak to any of our Visitor Services associates.

Dinner Confirmations (for sitting together as a group)

*** If you've already RSVPed for this event, you may not be given the option for filling out the questionnaire. If that's the case, please do send me the following information (by email, included in your RSVP or included in the discussion section for the event).

What time do you want to have dinner? (6pm or 8pm?)
Do you want to sit together for dinner?
How many people are you bringing as a guest?

It is my intentions to allow members to sign up for whatever dinner time that suits them and try to make arrangements for them to sit together with other BAPAS members, if they want to. (Note: I will be still be going to the dinner at 8pm and sticking with our original schedule. I wanted to add more flexibility for those who really wanted to go to dinner at 6pm or wanted to see different shows.)

It was great to meet you! Interesting event (hopefully the weather will be good enough to see stars another time) and great venue plus good food and company. Thank you for organizing it!!!

I will try to make it to the gift shop around 5:30. I will have on a red shirt and jeans. :) Please add me to the guest list if at all possible.

I will be wearing a gray & black striped sweater dress with black boots if anyone would like to meet me around 5:30pm in the gift shop before the 6pm Mysteries of Egypt (Theater Show) starts. :)

    Here's the weather for Chabot Space and Science Center: <http://www.chabotspace.org/weather-station.htm>;

The bad news is we're not likely to be doing much observing Saturday night, although we may be able to squeeze in a few hours of Jupiter with the 8".

Good weather or not, I'll be there as a telescope operator, but I suggest that you all take the time to enjoy the dinner and the movies and worry a little bit less about getting a shot at the telescopes:-(

So it looks as if we have ten people now sitting together. I just called Chabot back to make changes. There are only three folks here who I've not heard from.

    November 5, 2010

  • Elise

Here's the final guest list who will be sitting together for dinner: Myself +1, Athena, Michael Hwang + 1, Alessandra + 1. So that's seven of us at one table.

I need to call them right now to make these arrangements. Anyone who've I've missed who wants to sit with us - please let me know right away! Otherwise, everyone else will be at their own tables - which might be what is preferred by some. I just need to have a precise guest list to give them.

    November 5, 2010

  • ATHENA

Could you add me to the guest list? Would like to sit together. Thanks

    November 4, 2010

  • Elise

    Hi Athena,

As far as I know, whoever wants to sit together will be sitting together. So far though, that's only four of us. I haven't heard word back from the others. I'll need a final guest list if we are sitting together no later than Friday, but preferably by tomorrow.

    November 2, 2010

  • ATHENA

    Alise,
will we all be eating together and is there a meeting point in the center? Asking for the 8pm diners.

    November 2, 2010

  • Elise

Others who haven't answered those three important questions - please do so or fire me a reply back to the email I just sent:
What time do you want to have dinner? (6pm or 8pm?)
Do you want to sit together for dinner?
How many people are you bringing as a guest?

    October 23, 2010

  • Elise

Thanks Alessandra for your quick reply... I just sent out an email to those who have already RSVPed asking for that info, just in case. Feel free to ignore the email since you've already answered my questions here.

Thank you for the updates. I would like to have dinner with everyone. It is me plus one (Dan) at 8pm.

    October 23, 2010

  • Elise

I've just updated details for this event. I think I've included all options and have thought of every eventuality, but please let me know if I missed anything. I'm still going to the 8pm dinner time, since that allows for the most amount of potential telescope viewing time (if the skies are clear).

    October 23, 2010

  • Susan

This is about the only Chabot event I haven't attended, so wasn't sure what the logistics would be. I am just happy that the Space Science Center is being highlighted in our little schedule, I have been going there with my daughter since the grand opening.

    October 23, 2010

  • Elise

You can have dinner at the 6pm time of course, but the only problem with that is that it seems most of us are having dinner at 8pm and also that would lock you into seeing shows after dinner would which mean you might not get much telescope time. Start time is 6pm, regardless of when you want to have dinner though. I'm going to update the details here, so everyone is aware of their options. I prefer to eat earlier too usually...

    October 23, 2010

  • Susan

Do we have to have dinner to sit with the crowd? 8pm is a little late for me in the eating dept. I do hope the skies will be clear that night, I love to cycle through the telescopes and see what is being displayed.

    October 23, 2010

  • Elise

Changes to the meetup to follow soon, since it seems that the start time for this event is 6pm, regardless of when we would have chosen to have dinner. Sorry for not realizing this earlier.

    October 22, 2010

  • ATHENA

Sitting together would be my option. I will make sure I bring cash for the dinner part.

    October 22, 2010

  • Elise

We need to decide ahead of time if we're going to be sitting at the same table or not. If we do want to sit at the same table, that's not a problem, but the bill will all be on one check. The dinner is $18.00 each, but if anyone orders alcohol, thats extra of course. Given that most of us have a fairly solid background in math and science, I doubt that splitting a restaurant bill should be too intimidating. But please let me know what you want me to arrange on that!

    October 22, 2010

  • Elise

I was making babysitting arrangements, so I made my reservations just now, also for Mysteries of Egypt at 6pm and Maya skies at 8pm.

I just made reservations and we are going to the 6pm Mysteries of Egypt and 7pm Tales of the Maya Skies, then dinner at 8. There is a dinosaurs film too for those who are interested (we have to choose 2 out of 3). I hope the weather is good enough to see the sky after dinner!

Thank you Elise. They are closed today but I'll call tomorrow to make reservations!

    October 19, 2010

  • Elise

Yep! We're going at the 8pm time. Jonathan just had suggested (during the last meeting) that we at least mention the 6pm time for those who might not want to go at 8pm, just to make people aware of the other options. But the official time is for 8pm for this event.

    October 19, 2010

  • Elise

Hi Alessandra, Glad you can join us at the Chabot Space Center. Yes, you've got it right. You order tickets either from their website or you can call them to order tickets by phone. Either way you get the tickets, you need to call in order to make reservations for dinner. (510)[masked]

    October 19, 2010

  • Elise

@Athena, I hadn't had a chance to order my tickets yet - so I haven't figured out the options yet. I'll try to get to that tonight and get back with you. Have you already signed up?

@Stephen That's rather cool! Hope to see you then, even if you're not joining us for the other parts, by virtue of your being on duty.

Well, gee. I'm a telescope operator there and that's one of my night shift days. Can't exactly sign up for the meetup, but I'll be there by definition:-)

This sounds like a really great idea and it looks like there's a lot of interest.

As an aside, it looks as if there are a few neat upcoming events, including one for this weekend. I won't post it as an event, since it's literally tomorrow. But I'll just leave the link here, in case anyone's interested:

This also sounds like a lot of fun:
