Intermediate Obedience Class (beyond Basic), six weeks

  • Jan 5, 2014 · 10:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

ONLY RSVP for number of dogs you are signing up. Class starts at 10:15 a.m., except for Week 1, which starts at 10:30 a.m. due to the likelihood of the prior class running a little late.

Chako's six week basic obedience class designed for dogs that already know the following (and are fairly reliable with each):

• sit

• down

• stay

• loose leash walking

• come

We will be practicing proofing these commands with a greater level of distraction as well as introducing more formal heeling (i.e., competition style obedience) and sits and downs while in motion.

All dogs MUST be BACKED UP. You will bring your dogs to week 1 (unlike Basic where you go to week 1 with no dogs). You should have already taken a basic obedience course (anywhere is fine) and you should KNOW how to back up your dog's equipment (if you took a Chako basic class, you know how to do this). If you do NOT know how to back up your dog's equipment, please contact us in advance of week 1. We recommend that you get a six-way training leash (also known as a European training leash), available online at various retailers, and put two pieces of equipment on your dog (i.e., two collars or a collar and a harness), and have each end of the leash attached to a different piece of equipment on your dog. That way if one fails, your dog is attached to something else.

Bring LOTS of tasty treats to class (chicken or steak) and, if your dog is toy motivated, bring a favorite toy. Do NOT feed your dog his or her usual meal before class, and arrive to class the area 10-15 minutes early to walk your dog around (there is a class just before, so please be respectful of the prior class and give departing dogs plenty of room).

• Always keep a safe distance between dogs

• Always have your dog backed up in class

• Bring your dog to class HUNGRY

• Never drop the leash unless instructed to do so by the instructor

• Clean up after your dog

• BRING your dogs proof of rabies vaccination to week 1. Dogs must be at least six months old to attend this class.

• Class meets rain or shine

This intermediate class is limited to six students. We require a minimum of 5 students to hold this class, so if the class does not make the quota, your money will be refunded.

Note: no restrooms are available at this location.

By participating in this class, you release Chako Pit Bull Rescue and its officers, agents, volunteers, and representatives from liability for any injury that you or your dog may sustain, including but not limited to injuries cased by the negligence of any officer, agent, volunteer, or representative of Chako Pit Bull Rescue.

Hi there! Garvey and I won't be attending tomorrow. I thought I would be back by now, but the elephant seals have enchanted me and I am still in San Simeon. See you next week.

Hi Jackie! Sophie and I will not be coming this morning. I am fighting a bad head cold and do not want to infect anyone else.
Is there anything new I can be working on with Sophie this week so we are not too far behind?

Hi everybody. Just wanted to remind you all that Intermediate Obedience is starting this coming Sunday. Please remember to bring lots of treats, a treat apron/holder, and your normal collar/leash and backup. Try to allow for a 15 minute walk before we start class. Weather is not a problem in our location so we will never cancel because of that. For week one, we will be reviewing and refreshing previously learned skills so that we can begin building on the basics as soon as possible. See you then!

I accidently paid for the beginning obedience class before I paid for this one. Can I please be refunded the Beginning obedience fee? Thank you

    What does backed up mean?

    December 12, 2013

    • Dawn

Backed up means that your dog should have two pieces of equipment and something attached to each one. Google "European Training Leash" as an example. It is one leash with a clasp on each end -- so one clasp can be attached to a collar and the other clasp to another collar, harness, head halter, etc. You may want to try our basic class first that goes over equipment.

Is there a discount for the class if my dog is a Chako adoptee as there was for the beginning obedience class?
