Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test

Canine Good Citizen test open to all. (Pit Bulls and obvious mixes are $10, all others are $20--manually adjust the price upward when RSVPing for a non-Pit Bull). RSVP for dogs ONLY.

You can get more information on the CGC test by visiting the AKC's website:

http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm

If you pass, you can send away to the AKC for your dog's CGC certificate (AKC charges a small fee to send your certificate). If you don't pass, don't worry! You can always try again later.

For collars, dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip ("choke") collars. Martingale style (sometimes called "limited slip") collars are permitted. Special training collars such as pinch collars, head halters, and electronic collars are not permitted in the CGC test. Regular harnesses are allowed (but no pull harnesses such as the EZ walk are not allowed).

Please make sure that your dog's equipment is SECURE and your dog cannot back out or slip out of his or her equipment. We strongly recommend that you back up your dog's equipment while your dog is waiting its turn.

What to bring:

  • Appropriate collar or regular harness (see above for what's allowed)
  • Secure leash
  • Your dog's brush
  • Water for you and your dog
  • Copy of your dog's rabies certificate
  • Pen to fill out paperwork

Observers without dogs are welcome (but we may rope you into volunteering for the "crowd"). Please email me and let me know if you'd like to observe without your dog.

This was great! I showed up hoping to find out what I need to work on with Benny, and he ended up passing! A great experience overall.

The test was implemented just as the CGC website said it would be. It was organized and flowed. A great experience.

It is very low key with out stress.Good to take even if not quite ready just to find out what you need to work on.It can be fun if you let it be.
Thanks Dawn for doing this for us.

We hold dog reactivity workshops that you should consider signing up for. The next one won't be for a few months, though.

My girl Lolie has behavior problems....extremely intelligent and loves people but she's very dog aggressive! It has been so limiting for her and me! What class do I sigm up for to get help. She was rescued at about 5 months old from a kill shelter 4 years ago.

Winona, we don't know when the next test will be. We generally have these about twice a year :)

This is not ideal for dog's with serious behavior issues. The Canine Good Citizen test is designed for dogs that have their basic manners/obedience down fairly well.

Is this class for dogs who have behavioral problems and/or are disobedient? I like the certification part of this with the AKC. I have an American Staffordshire Terrier that i wouldn't mind getting certified, but he is super sweet and minds me incredibly well and has zero behavioral issues. Is this something I need or that could benefit me, or my dog, in any way?
