Pit Bull U: Shelter Pit Bull Volunteer Orientation

Training/Orientation for current and interested volunteers for our Pit Bull shelter training program.

Have you ever thought about volunteering for Chako's Pit Bull University? If you are seriously interested in volunteering at the city or county shelter as part of Chako's "Pit Bull U" program, join us at this orientation and training session at the County Shelter (thank you to the County Shelter for making their training room available to us!).

The training is estimated to last 2 to 2.5 hours.

Open to both current volunteers who need training refresher and new people who are thinking about volunteering.

Why volunteer? Help make shelter Pit Bulls more adoptable by working on their basic manners, getting them out of their kennels and helping to combat kennel stress, and giving them some play time. Each of our Pit Bull candidates gets a sign on their kennel to catch the eye of potential adopters, which helps the dogs get more exposure and get adopted more quickly (and often avoid becoming a shelter statistic).

Chako offers this program FREE to both the Sacramento city and county shelters -- all for the dogs! And we can't do it without YOU! Volunteers who generously donate their time to help the dogs at the shelter.

(No outside dogs are allowed inside the shelter, FYI - it goes without saying, but I figure I'd say it anyway!)

What to bring/wear: casual clothes that you don't mind getting dog hair and slobber on, sensible, closed-toed shoes appropriate for working in a shelter environment, pen and notepad.

This has limited space so please remember to change your RSVP if you first sign up and later realize you cannot make it.

If they go to the City one can they still volunteer at County? or should they wait until there is one at County?

      April 17, 2013

    • Dawn

Yes, they will just get a shadowing time at county to follow around existing volunteers....which is standard anyway!

Class was very informative. I love what Chako has been able to do for the bully breed.

Unfortunately I had something come up last minute for work that I can't get out of. I'm bummed I won't be able to make it, but look forward to attending the next orientation.

With how popular this event seems to be, would you consider an early morning session in addition to the afternoon?

    February 5, 2013

    • Carol

We are so excited about the interest in the event! Because of the coordination of various people and resources that are needed for the orientation, having two on the same day isn't possible on this date. Also, we have limited meeting space and availability. Rest assured we will evaluate the success of this orientation, make adjustments where needed and schedule a subsiquent orientation as soon as it is practical. Thank you so much for your interest!

I agree with Amanda. When will the next orientation be for those who are in the wait list?

    February 5, 2013

    • Amanda G.

I'm thinking we'll be okay on that end, Jen. There is a good chance some people won't be able to make it. I'm just hopeful they'll change their rsvps. :-)

What is the cut off age for the shelter? 18?

    January 15, 2013

    • Dawn

You can ask for celeste at the shelter, but I believe it's either 16 or 18. I'm not 100% sure though

I sent an e-mail to Celeste and asked her. Her response was "18 to have hands-on animal contact. Otherwise from 12-17, there is a small teen program that does social projects around the shelter in support of the animals, such Kong stuffing, making adoption go-home goodie bags, decorating for an event, etc..."

Neither of us can attend; just lost the pit-love-of-my-life to cancer after nearly 12 years and I'm beat. See so many waiting for this I thought I oughta change my rsvp! Tearful but I'll try again!

I am looking forward to helping pit bulls so they can find forever homes.

I volunteer at the Sacramento County shelter on Bradshaw Road. It's a lovely facility but it has way too many pit bull residents. If you have wanted to volunteer there, please know that we have an orientation this Saturday, January 12, from 1pm to 3pm. We could always use people who love animals of any kind, but our pitties could really use your love and attention. I hope you stop by!

We ask everyone who is interested in volunteering with any shelter outside of Chako to contact the shelter directly. Celeste Ingrid is the volunteer coordinator for the shelter. We don't want to be inadvertently sounding like we represent the shelter on this page, so we ask that any shelter-related announcements be kept off this meetup to limit confusion. (Confusion happens a lot!) :)
