Yona Harvey is a literary artist and university professor in creative writing who lives and works in Pittsburgh. She appears at Writers LIVE with her extraordinary debut poetry collection, Hemming the Water.
Described by the poet Toi Derricotte as having “fierce elegance,” Harvey’s collection of thirty-five original poems speaks to the futility of trying to mend or straighten a life that constantly changes.
Hemming the Water (the title is inspired by a John Keats poem) uses the metaphor of water to explore the “impossible task” of controlling and shaping one’s life. Yona Harvey’s poems can also be found in jubilat, Gulf Coast, Callaloo, West Branch and other journals and anthologies.
As City Paper notes "Inspired by the great jazz musician Mary Lou Williams, Harvey sews (and sows) sound patterns that sing"
