Map and compass land navigation challenge

The Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club will host a meet at Deer Lakes county park (Pine shelter) on Sunday Sept 16, from 11 AM to 2 PM. It will be free for those that are new to the sport and have not done this before (for all others, it is $5/map).

Orienteering is a sport that combines physical aspects such as running or walking, and thinking - in this case it is map reading. An astute thinker but slower participant can out-beat a youthful energetic competitor should the latter make the wrong turn or other navigational mistake.

Instruction is provided on site by volunteers. Compass are available for loan.

I have attended many of these. I enjoy the challenge and being out in the woods. I picked a harder one than I have done before and it was a definite challenge.

I enjoyed my first time Orienteering. Well organized event. The mistakes I made helped me to better under stand the features of the map.

Once you have reached the entrance of Deer Lakes county park, there will be white-and-red arrow signs posted, leading to the shelter where the meet HQ is located.

Is anybody passing through the downtown area to this event willing to car pool? I have gone to these orienteering events in the past and would love to go to this one also. Send me an email if we can work something out. Thank you.
