I think you need to be the Vance Lehmkuhl "V is for Veg" columnist for Pittsburgh!

There seemed to be a general sentiment of "the hell with supplements," during part of the book club, which I think is a not widely-held position amongst nutritionists, including vegan ones with Ginny Messina of http://www.theveganrd.com/

    and Jack Norris of http://jacknorrisrd.com/

both recommending at the very least a vitamin b12 supplement and being familiar with other cross-promoted work of Dr. Michael Greger

And one more thought (and then I promise I'll stop). I realize that the the book was more about changing our thinking about nutriton and health care and reductionist thinking etc., however, I just wish some of these issues would have been addressed a little or at least mentioned. I think he did make a powerful argument for what a disaster our healtcare system is right now. I certainly am even more afraid to go to the doctors now than ever before...

Agreed on nutrition; also thought it was interesting he both kind of poked fun at using rat studies for cancer research, while also using it in his defense of the WFPD

And heres the link to the More than an Apple a Day presentation from Dr. Gregor that Niki mentioned:http://nutritionfacts.org/video/more-than-an-apple-a-day-preventing-our-most-common-diseases/

At the very least, supplementing is another form of preventative care, which costs significantly less than getting in trouble with a deficiency, and the supplement recommendations are made in mind with research that shows where vegans are lacking in nutrition, such as b12

I'm bowing out...hopefully someone who can participate 'in person' can fill my spot... would LOVE to discuss the book with one/some of you after you've had the group discussion, however.... Niki? Sarah? Marc? Kate?

I came across this movie today that is about our current "disease-care system" that is also calling for change. Though not as focused on the nutrition as the book, it certainly is calling for a similar kind of change. Sadly Netflix doesn't have it yet, so I'm not sure if there is a way to see it without purchasing it. http://doctoredthemovie.com/index.php/

Apologies, my kind-hearted friends. After a few hours sleep I woke to some swollen, stingy eyes... I tried to flush them out, but couldn't drive from the North Hills until I was better - ironically, I'm presuming I have some new kitty allergies - my new buddy is a bit of a long-haired, my old BFF was a shorty (I'll have to keeps supply of Visine on hand until I build back up my allergies resistance). Until next time, good folk.

Niki/Sarah: I'm sorry to report I'm not able to make the event this Saturday. :( My schedule has gotten way too hectic with back to back appts, and the fun stuff list is being edged out by the must do list. I'm looking forward to staying connected and future reads though! Niki, the check will be mailed for the Moss event. Thx!

Outside of work I have not been on a conf call with most or all of the group is at one location. However, once or twice I did use this: http://www.freeconference.com/. It was free and worked like a charm for about 10 remote participants.

What are your thoughts on a speaker-phone, call-in participant from across the state? Anyone have a phone plan that would accept that, without costing an arm and a leg?

    What is book #9?

    June 16, 2013

    • Niki P.

I hope it doesn't disappoint! It seemed to get good reviews, was on a topic I thought would be interesting, and one of the descriptions I read on it said it didn't go overboard on graffic, horrific descriptions of stuff (it said they were minimal)
