Plant-based Runner Support Group

Let's meet and discuss what it's like to be a plant-based runner. Whether you're a runner who looks at prize money before deciding which races to enter or you try and figure out which races are small enough that you might sneak into an age-group award, the basic issues we face are pretty much the same. Some suggested topics are snacks (store-bought or home made), recovery foods and pre-race rituals. All ages, abilities or even those who never ran, but are considering it, are welcome.

I am so sorry I missed you guys yesterday. Sounds like it was very helpful few hours! I hope there will be more of these in the future too! I just got the No Meat Athlete book and it's a great resource too. He's also got training plans and fueling recommendations - he wrote the book with a vegan dietician. My goal is to run the Pgh Marathon 5K in the spring (for team Hope Haven!) and I think I'm going to follow his training plan. His website is packed with good info too: http://www.nomeatathlete.com/ I'm also happy to share my copy of his book with anyone who is interested.

Thanks Steve for putting this up and everyone for sharing. What an information packed 1.5 hours! Here's the website with the grid I used for my half-marathon training: http://www.marathonrookie.com/half-marathon-training.html

Steve, thank you for organizing a great conversation! I learned so much today (and am grateful you suggested I start running in the spring!)

Sorry I wasn't able to make it...I'm hoping that there will be more of these in the future. If anyone can give suggestions that were brought up, I'd greatly appreciate it! Especially regarding energy during runs, which is my biggest problem.

If this is going to be an on-going group, I'd love to get involved in the future. I'm not able to run at the moment, but I'm hoping by spring I'll be able to at least a little. I'd love to have some plant powered frined to connect with when I do finally hit the road again.

I hope so. All are welcome, even those not currently running or those who have never run.

I'm sorry that I won't be able to make it to the get-together (I go to college in Lewisburg, PA and won't be in Pittsburgh this weekend), but I am a runner, and over the summer I worked as an intern with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)'s VegRUN program for plant-based runners. It's a great resource, and I just wanted to put the word out about it in case anyone would be interested! :) If you have any questions about it, I'd be happy to answer them!

    Happy running! :)

Tara - thanks for alerting us to the PCRM site! I just spent time on it and found some great articles and handouts!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
