Sarah, Colleen, Rosemary-- the March book order is in at TBI!!!!

    February 10, 2013

  • Niki P.

TO ALL WHO ATTENDED TODAY'S BOOK CLUB!!!!!!!!

Thanks to ALL for your input and your help (with a *special* thanks to those who helped me schlep stuff upstairs afterwards!)

Um, so..... I've learned that I need a slightly more organized process to get the books ordered, but I'll work that out next time. For now, I just wanna make sure I got this all straight and didn't mess up too badly:

I ordered March's book, Eating Animals, for the following:
    Sarah S.
    Rosemary M.

I ordered April's book, Eat and Run, for the following:
    Steve S.
    Ellen S
    Sarah S
    Rosemary M
    Sean K
    Kate P.

WHO DID I MISS? Does anyone else want me to add them to the orders? If so, let me know SOON so that I can catch The Big Idea before they put the order in for us: All I need is your full name and phone number. Thanks all!!!!!!!!!
    Until next time,
    Niki~

      Fantastic. Thanks!

      January 20, 2013

    • Niki P.

To all: The orders for both books have gone in. 3 copies of the March book at $14.99 each. 9 copies of the April book at $26 each-- no fault of the Big Idea, the book is ONLY available right now in hardcopy (likely because it's so new!) Either TBI or I will let you know when they're ready for pick up-- or you can just get them at our February meeting!!!!!!!!

I have a follow-up to Sarah's astute observation about the use of "farm animals" on the cover but "farmed animals" on the title page:

Jenny told me today that her publisher nixed using the term "farmed animals" on the cover. But she snuck it past the publisher and got it onto the title page!

This relates directly to the obfuscation of flesh eating in the English language, which we'll be reading more about in "Sexual Politics."

Thank you to all who attended the meet-up. You are all a wonderful support to me personally on my journey to being a vegan. But more importantly the meet-up is fun! Special thanks to our organizers for all of your efforts in keeping the mechanics of the group well oiled so that we can continue to meet on a regular basis.

A truly lovely group of people. A great suggestion - especially so rewarding as the lifestyle change is a welcome addition to my ongoing personal journey.

Great first book choice and energizing discussion with all at today's meetup! :-)

    1 · January 19, 2013

Wonderful discussion!! I wish I could have stayed longer! Can't wait till next month!

    4 · January 19, 2013

I agree. Great discussion! I am so excited to do this again!

Can't wait to see everyone and chat on Saturday! Also, since I read the Kindle version of the book, I'd love a glimpse at the photos in the physical books :)

    January 17, 2013

  • nat

any chance of making an additional time as well? i can't make it on saturday afternoons :/ seems like there's lots of interest and enough for an additional group?

    January 14, 2013

    • Niki P.

Honestly, it would be much easier, in my mind, to just start a *separate* unrelated group, as opposed to creating an addition to this group with a secondary set of logistics to coordinate. Since anyone can create or suggest an event at any time, i'd say that if anyone wants to start another book club (that meets on different days and time and has its own way of doing business), then go for it!!!!!!

      January 14, 2013

    • Kate P

I just love that there are so many interested in book club(s)! This is awesome!

Another space is open - I just finished my revised RSVP. Wish I could be with you for the big discussion. I've visited Farm Sanctuary's facilities near Watkins Glen, NY and loved it! I heard Jenny Brown speak at Veg. Summerfest last year - powerful. Hopefully I'll see you all in Feb. I've already got that book.

    January 17, 2013

    • Niki P.

Penny I'm so sorry to hear you can't make it-- but thank you so much for updating your RSVP! Because of space issues (I set the cap a little bit too big for the room!) I've shut down the waiting list, so new people still wont be able to join at this point-- but either way the update helps , so thanks again for letting us know! Hope to see you in February!!!!!!

I have a confession to make. I'm about half way through the book and I'm not loving it. I'm not hating it, but I'm also not extremely captivated. I don't know what is wrong with me!

    1 · January 12, 2013

    • Niki P.

Listen, there may not be room for all the people, but there's at least room for all the opinions!

      1 · January 12, 2013

  • Niki P.

OK all, it's come to light that 25 people is gonna be.... a few too many for the space. (Ooops.) Don't worry, we won't kick anyone out! But expect it to be... crowded... this time around... and if you can't make it, PLEASE change your RSVP to let us know!!! To remedy this problem in the future, there will be a few changes. First and foremost, I contacted the Big Idea and they agreed to let us reserve the space from 11-2 (an extra hour) every month: That way even our big group will have time to get snacks and coffee, get situated, etc... and STILL have time to talk about the book! Also, it means that future book club meetings will be capped at fewer people, for everyone's sitting and discussing pleasure. But like Kate said, not being to attend an individual meeting won't impact anyone's ability to participate in future meetings so there should be chances for everyone (since, after all, not everyone will be available for every meeting or want to read every book).

    3 · January 10, 2013

  • Kate P

Hi everyone, it's great to see so many people doing the book club!! I just saw that it's now full, so if you find that you are going to be unable to come, please change your RSVP so if people are waiting, they can join. And remember, changing your RSVP for individual meetings won't at all affect your ability to participate in future book club meetings.

    I finally got my book!!!!!!

A spot just opened up. The Beet-Eating Heeb just realized that he and Jeffrey Cohan were both RSVP'd -- and they're the same person. Problem corrected.

I've finished reading The Lucky Ones. Anyone with a Kindle, let me know if you'd like to borrow it.

    January 6, 2013

    • bill h

Hmmm. I retract my offer, this book is not lendable. @Kate....I'll post instructions later today when I'm at a computer, can't from my phone.

      January 6, 2013

    • bill h

I mean this PARTICULAR book is not lendable. I'll post how to lend books (including how to determine if a book is lendable) later.

      January 6, 2013

  • Rosemary M.

I have a copy on iBooks that I would like to loan out. But I don't know how. If anyone knows please advise me.

hey all, if you were at the December meeting and you ordered a copy of our February book.... the shipment has arrived at The Big Idea!!!! You can either wait until 1/19 to pick up your copy.... or stop in there anytime! (And for those of you who weren't there in December, don't worry: They said they'd order a few extra copies for purchase, or you can pick up a copy on your own.)

On a personal note: I'd also like to add that while my February book, ordered through the Big Idea, has arrived.... my January book, ordered through Amazon, still has NOT. Seriously.

I plan on picking mine up this weekend and maybe spending some time there working on things.. It's such a cool place, and I can't believe I'd never been! I am really looking forward to reading the next book, especially after Jenny Brown mentioned it a couple of times.

      1 · January 3, 2013

    • Niki P.

Thanks Mallory! They said give it 12 business days to arrive... meaning it'd better be here by tmw!!!

Kate, There is a lecture st St. Clair Hospital on Jan 16 that you may be interested in for your health coaching. It is listed in the upcoming Vegan meet up section.

Finished the book the same day I got it. It's a wonderful read. I set a 25-person limit for the meetup, because the room simply can't accommodate more people. We may have to break into sub-groups as it is.

    1 · December 26, 2012

    • Niki P.

I'd also encourage folks to please change their RSVP to NO if it turns out they can't make it!!!!

I got my cppy of "The Lucky Ones" from the library at the beginning of this past week. It is NOT a one week book. (I checked personally with the librarian today at Squirrel Hill). There IS definitely a long list of holds. My copy is due back on January 10. So if anyone finds they can't possibly get a copy I will pass mine on to them as long as they swear a deep dark oath to return it to the LIbrary by January 10th.

    1 · December 23, 2012

    • Aimee D.

The South Park Township library has it as a one week lend. I believe it is at the discretion of each library. Perhaps because I picked it up at the end of this week and there is a demand for it, they've instituted a one-week limit. I picked it up at the Oakmont library and the system will not allow me to renew it because of the amount of hold requests.

      1 · December 23, 2012

    • Philip C.

That makes sense. I suppose that I am lucky that Squirrel Hill is my home library. The offer still holds for those l

I am so excited for this meetup! I read this book in a little over 24 hours. Such a compelling story. I would love to go and visit the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary at some point now.

Is there room for another?? :-) Sign me up!

      December 23, 2012

      December 23, 2012

  • Aimee D.

I just picked up my copy from the library today, and it's only available for a week, so I guess I better get reading :)

    1 · December 22, 2012

    • Aimee D.

They are, but sometimes the newer ones are only 1. There's also someone else waiting for it as well. I guess that bodes well that it's in demand :)

      December 22, 2012

    • Sarah

Ha ha. I got it out from the library not too long after it came out. But I didn't realize it was only for a short time either, so I wound up having to return it before I actually read it! From what others are saying, it sounds like you shouldn't have a problem getting trough it in such a short time, though. I've been holding off starting it this time because I'm afraid I'll forget the rest of life and go into reading hibernation.

Pretty cool that Jenny Brown, the author of our first selection, speaks glowingly about our second selection in her book. See p. 100.

Nice. I think this means we are on the right track with our book selections :)

      December 23, 2012

  • Sarah

I am soooooooo excited for this book club!!! I picked up the book on Saturday too (Interestingly, it was in the Nature section at Barnes and Noble?) and I'm even more intrigued by it now. And thinking ahead for future books, is there a place on here we can keep a running list that everyone can add to if we happen to come across more books that look like potential possibilities for the future? I am liable to forget even the ones we already discussed as options if I don't have something to look back on!

    1 · December 17, 2012

    • Kate P

Yes! You can make a discussion thread! (under discussion tab)

      December 17, 2012

    • Sarah

Excellent idea. I just started a new discussion topic for the book suggestions. I'll compile whatever people post there into a word document and bring it to the meetings so we can have something to look through when choosing a new book.

Looking forward. Do we bring a vegan snack or dessert?

    December 16, 2012

No, the Big Idea has coffee and snacks, cold salads, and dessert items for sale - all vegan! :-)
