Fort Funston - Beach Play & Hike (Yes, it's on Saturday :)

I know we usually meet on Sundays but the only time I have available in the first half of the month of July is on Saturdays, so let's do this on a Saturday...doggies need exercises and socializing!  :)

On the dunes at the south end of Ocean beach, towering above the Pacific Ocean, Fort Funston is one of the premiere dog hangouts on the Peninsula.  We will walk down to the beach first and let the doggies play and run around, then take a little hike up the trail.  The whole park is off-leash.

We'll meet at the hang gliding area (look for the big patch of mulching) by main parking lot , which leads down to the beach.  I'll wait for about 15 minutes before heading down to the beach, if you're late, please text/call me!  (If you don't have my number yet, please email me for it.  :)

Getting There:

Fort Funston is located south of the San Francisco Zoo, across Highway 35 (Skyline Blvd) from Lake Merced. Take Highway 35 South from the city and exit on your right after John Muir Dr to reach Fort Funston’s main parking lot.

It was fun hiking with all of you at Fort Funston! Thank you Sophia for organizing another great hike. We had a great time and great conversations with several people in the group. It was nice to meet people from Montreal and new comers to this meet-up. We're looking forward to more fun hikes with all of you :D

If you haven't heard plane crash at SFO so there be be traffic! See you all soon!

    1 · July 6, 2013

    • Sophia

Thank for the post, Nina! They don't think there were any fatalities, thank goodness! Current traffic leading to Fort Funston looks OK as long as you avoid HWY 101. do take 280. But check the traffic before you leave!

      1 · July 6, 2013

    • Nina

You're welcome and will do! For us going 280 would take forever coming from Oakland. We plan to leave @ 2:30 to give us an hour to get there!

Sabrina has gotten big shes 58lbs she's does great with dogs of all sizes just wanted to make sure we're ok to still come tomorrow. She's more in the medium to large dog group than small to medium.

    July 5, 2013

    • Sophia

Oh, that is definitely outside of the "small to medium" range (under 40 pounds would be ideal), and considering that I think we have a few very small breeds and puppies this time, may not be the best idea having a large dog in the group, sorry Therese! And thank you for checking, I do appreciate it!

Thanks Sophia I understand. like I said she does great with smaller dogs but I wouldn't want to make any one uncomfortable. Have a great day at the beach!

The berries and I are familiar with most of the trails at Fort Funston and would be willing to lead the group on the waitlist if you're interested.

    1 · July 1, 2013

    • Sophia

Great, thank you, Elizabeth! I'll go ahead and open up the RSVP to a larger group and I'll take the first timers, you can lead the rest of the group. But we'll wait for the whole group to get there first before you go on. :)

Things have changed and I'm now a maybe since I'll be coming back that day after being out of town. And since there are so many people on the waiting list, it's not fair for me to take a spot that one of them could use...so I'll change to a "no".

    July 1, 2013

  • Diana

Hi, new to this meet up. Can I just go to this event anyway despite being on the wait list?

    July 1, 2013

    • Sophia

Welcome to the group, Diana! :) That is a great question! Well, I do like to keep this group as organized as possible so that people don't end up wasting their time, so I do like to stick to the list. And I keep the group size manageable for each event to maximize our time and the benefits of socializing in smaller groups.

      July 1, 2013

    • Sophia

I also meant to say that people often change their RSVP's at the last minute, so you have a good chance moving up from the waitlist, so we may see you soon! :)

My sister is arriving on Friday and she may like to see Fort Funston.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
