July Akl Game Dev Meetup

  • July 2, 2014 · 6:00 PM

The meetup is in a different room this month  - but don't worry it's only a few steps away from the usual space and there will be an ambassador to show you the way.  The room number is WE230 and you can follow the signs.

6.00 Arrive - Listen to music by local game composers while you get seated.

6.10 David Zwierzchaczewski, the 3D specialist at Autodesk, will be show casing some of the new features in Maya 2015 that are geared towards empowering the artist such as Geodesic Voxel Binding, 3D Unwapping and Shader FX.  This presentation was shown at GDC and was well received by both programmers and artists and will be your chance to gain an insight into how to optimise your pipeline and work flow.

6.40 Spotlight and Notices

If you have anything you'd like to show contact Ben Kenobi ([masked]). You can do either a shout-out for a few minutes or you can demo your game in the atrium with big screens and tables.

7.00 Refreshments and Demos up in WG level 11.

Our guest sponsor this month is Autodesk.  Thanks heaps Autodesk!

8.00ish Pub

Follow us over to Metrolanes Bowling, upstairs in the Metro Centre next to Aotea Square.  They give us a discount on food!

Hi there - I am looking for TEN GAMERS to be part of a FOCUS GROUP as part of my RESEARCH project. I can hold the session at AUT on FRIDAY THE 18TH at 6PM. Would anyone be able to help please? It won't take more than an hour and I will be asking very general questions open for discussion. I would REALLY appreciate your time. Please email me at [masked]
    Many thanks,

Hi, I'm trying to get hold of Mike Ford regarding 'photogrammetry' from the Media Design School. I believe he's a tutor. Could some one pass me on his details, would be much appreciated :)

Some quick notes from a busy meetup: My email address is [masked]

Lemme know if you wanna help out (Aug 22-24th). We have some support, sponsorship, & prizes already but more help will make more awesome eh? plus.google.com/u/0/communities/113924792899041374522?hl=en_US

We are still looking for speakers of (almost) all types (19th Sep), send me your topic & 3 practical take-aways for other NZ devs to take away. Don't be a shy Kiwi.

Once again I'm running the Homegrown section at DNZ (the weekend after the NZGDC). If you want to show your game please send me some info on your game (preferably an online video)...

(Oct 24-26). Lemme know if you wanna show your game - they've given us a great space - or give a talk at Armageddon.

I'm looking for someone to remake this youtube.com/watch?v=bRyakv-l7Cc. I have some footage but no time. Hollah!

    Great to see you all,

I said that I was available for design/implementation work, but didn't leave a contact address. In case anyone does want to get in touch, you can email me here:

Hey all, just wanted to say Thanks for the warm response. I completely screwed up what I had planned as the majority of my speech became rather irrelevant after David addressed the audience regarding 'photogrammetry'. Thanks for warming up the crowd. But that what we are doing, just a fair bit bigger that '123D Catch'. Just to be clear, we are still early stages, have secured funding and am waiting on many components to still come in, but is the nature with new start-ups. Anyone who is interested is welcome to come see the space, and if you're interested in jumping in with us and having the bonus of all the cool toys it comes with then don't hesitate to give me a buzz. Desks with all expenses are going from as little as $50.00pw including outgoings.

Here's the draft notes of what was to be my speech to whom may be interested. Next month, I promise to have a filmreel :)

Hey where are we setting up with screens? Is it in WE230 or is that just the talks?

Enjoy the meetup - from Autodesk

Hey people! We have significantly fewer screens this month due to a double booking, if you want to "book" one I can oblige - I imagine they'll go like hot cakes. We should have 10... as long as no one drops one.

Hey Ben, really sorry about this, but I've managed to corrupt my PP files, damn you Creative Cloud :) I will be making an appearance and will talk about what we are doing but sadly showreel will have to wait til next month. Just my luck Grrr.

Don't know if this is the right place to post this or not but I am been accepted into DigiPen this year and will be heading off this august and I'm looking for intern positions for next winter when I have break. I don't mind what I do, be it actually coding or just doing coffee runs, but observing a development team or part of one should help me get an idea of what I should be paying particular attention to, as well as helping me sharpen my work ethic. If anyone is interested/knows someone who might be interested or can give some advice, I would be grateful.

Grats on the placement btw. My suggestion would be to come up to the front during the end of the session as well. Say everything you just said. You never know. Regardless, good luck on your travels I hear good things about DigiPen.

I'm looking for music for the "Please be seated" portion of the evening. Only needs to be about 10 minutes worth. Soundcloud or other online service would be preferable. Otherwise send it through to me. You know the rules: made by someone looking for game dev work in NZ and you must be at the meetup.

Speaking of Kiwi Jam - why those dates were chosen? It's exactly when LD30 is being held. I personally would want to participate in both.

    June 26

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

The idea is it's actually both. The way we ran KiwiJam last year is that it was basically a shared work space for the exchange of ideas etc. But we also ran a small just-for-fun competition for those that were interested. Some participated. Some just worked on their own project. The idea behind doing it at this time is that if LD opens around 3pm on the Friday in the U.S. that means at 8am here on the Saturday, anyone who wants to do it has a shared/collaborative space. So we'll actually be framing this one as KiwiJam / Ludum Dare (posibly even also a unity workshop or something like that at the same time if someone puts one together). It's worth a try to see what comes of it. Its also partly to shine a light on the global gamejam (like Ludum Dare) culture. Get more people to have a go at it by seeing others do it and documenting it. Nurture some of the more fringe game designers.

I'm getting a lot of offers for input and ideas to discuss so to give us a central spot to discuss it - off this community - I've made a public community page ( https://plus.google.co... ) Feel free to join up and join the discussions.
