February reading: Dinner with Friends (1999) by Donald Margulies

  • February 17, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • ACT rehearsal space

[Note: date changed to Feb 17th.]

Donald Margulies play "Dinner with Friends" won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000.  "Dinner with Friends is a funny yet bittersweet examination of the married lives of two couples who have been extremely close for dozens of years. Although it seems to be treading on familiar ground, Dinner keeps changing its perspective to show how one couple’s breakup can have equally devastating effects on another’s stability."

As always, you must bring your own copy of the script.  PDFs are available in the More -> Files section of this meetup.

A good intro to a playwright (& play) I had heard of but never read

Had a great time. The play was such an incisive exploration of marriage and who's cut out for it and who's not. Or maybe it's about do you get it right the first time, or does it take a second or third time to find the person you're willing to stick it out with? Or maybe not bowing to convention and finding your own relationship style. But conventions can rip people apart as well as keep them together. Lots to chew on in this play.

My apologies for missing tonight. My car had a flat tire on the way to SF. I was really disappointed as I found the play at the library yesterday and read it at a cafe this afternoon.

My deepest apologies for the last minute cancellation. I went to the library to obtain the play, read it twice and was very excited about going tonight. However, I am feeling very poorly and can't muster the energy to go anywhere. Again, I am very sorry.

Sorry to beg off at this late date, but this day has not turned out as planned. I see there are lots of people to take all the parts, so no problem there. Have fun, all.

I'm a voracious reader of theatrical literature. I even written a few. Very excited to come read with a group.

Booked a gig for tomorrow so won't be back in time to join you for the read. Someone is free to take my space and I look forward to meeting you all at your next event.

I, too, absolutely love Moliere. For years I have searched for the colorful, excellent movie, "Moliere," I saw years ago at the now-gone Surf movie theater. Anyone have this movie or know anything about it?

  • Pat W.

Yes, let's do Moliere some time.

I hope you do another Moliere. He is my favorite. Shakespeare would be great too.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
