Lend me your ears! Let's journey to the Roman Republic, facing a crisis in the year 44 BC, as recreated by the Bard in 1599. Shakespeare's great political play reflects the general anxiety his contemporaries were feeling as Queen Elizabeth entered her old age without a proper successor.
The play is a perennial favorite, especially the 1953 film version directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring James Mason as Brutus and Marlon Brando as Marc Antony. It's widely available from video outlets and Netflix.
As usual with Shakespeare's plays there will be plenty of work for a larger group of readers.
Scripts are plentiful, including the Sparknotes and MIT collection listed below.
