So most of us have already tried Kogi along with all the Asian-Mex food trucks out there.

I heard that there's a place in Boyle Heights called Red Hot Kitchen that serves Korean-Mex, Chinese-Mex... basically Asian-Mex fusion street food.

Its a fixed location, so no chasing after food trucks if you end up liking what they serve. Best part is that its very affordable too.

I'm expecting the average cost per person to be between $10 to $15, depending on how many items you order.

On Sundays, the place ones at 1 PM, so I recommending that the group arrives at 12:45 PM, since the place only seats 18 people, and they don't take reservations.

The recent proliferation of gourmet food trucks serving fusion food is spreading all over town. Indian fusion food is well represented by the Dosa Truck and India Jones Chow Truck. Recently I had an opportunity to speak with Baba Ji, the Street Chef at a fun spot called Cowboys & Turbans, housed within the El Rey Theater.

If this sounds confusing to you, think Indian and Mexican fusion as the primary influence, with other American standbys as influences too. Naanwich, anyone? Would you like some masala fries with that? Maybe you’d prefer a tandoori taco?

It all sounded a bit strange to me, but I was reassured after reading some of these glowing reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/cowboys-and-turbans-los-angeles
You can also read more about them at their own website, and also follow them on Twitter: http://www.cowboysandturbans.com/index.html

Not only that, but our Street Chef promised a most memorable and generous tasting. For $15 per person via Paypal or $14 per person via check, you will get a taste of all these delicious items:

Appetizers/sides
samosa
fish taco
shrimp quesadilla (tasting portion)
masala fries
Chutney (condiment)

Entrees
chicken naanwich
Hyderabadi Biryani
chicken tikka masala with naan and rice

Dessert
Apple spice samosa with Mango gelato

Beverages
ice chai or limeade

And as an added bonus, the Chef Baba Ji would like to introduce the masala hot dog
to our group and looks forward to our feedback.

Please note that there is no plan to accommodate vegetarian meals or those allergic to shellfish. If this is an issue and you would like to join, I can look into the options for you. You can contact me for the mailing address if sending a check.

It will surely be a fun and tasty adventure!

The chef's table at Providence is perfect for those guests wanting the ultimate gourmet experience. The climate-controlled private room is the only table in the house with a full view of the kitchen. The chef's table is offered only with Chef Michael Cimarusti’s multi-course tasting menu.

Please note, this is not a ‘bargain’ meal. This dinner is known as the ultimate seafood tasting menu in town. The tasting menu is mandatory at this table and the cost is: $160 for 14 course chef’s tasting menu. Because it’s on a Monday the regular $30 corkage fee is waived for the evening. If the group would like, we an arrange our own wine selection to pair with the meal and at least save a bit of money on that end.

Providence received the following accolades:

"One of America's Top 50 Restaurants" - Gourmet Magazine
"One of America's Best New Restaurants 2005" - Esquire Magazine
"Nominated for Best New Restaurant 2005" - James Beard Foundation
"Best Seafood Restaurant 2006" - "Best of LA" Issue, LA Magazine
"Top 40 restaurants in the US" - Gayot.com

It will definitely be a memorable evening!

NOTE: Please note that all the Pleasure Palate membership rules stand for this event. You must have a current photo on your profile to attend events. Attendance policy and the 3-strike rule are valid.

Each diner will pay for their actual meal price plus any beverages, tax and tip. Please try to bring cash for simple bill payment. There will be 1-2 credit cards allowed per table.

Parking Details: Valet parking available at the corner of Melrose Avenue and Cole Avenue.

Probably the best time to visit the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden in Cal State Long Beach is during the Fall when they celebrate the Chrsyanthemum Show.

The garden is commonly used for wedding ceremonies, but this weekend, it will be open to the public and will feature the art of tea ceremony presented by Madam Numano and the Urasenke School of Tea. Formal tea ceremony will be performed in the Tea House for viewing and on the willow terrace where you can enjoy your own cup of powdered tea and traditional Japanese treat. Stunning chrysanthemum blooms from the nationally juried Chrysanthemum Society of Orange County Show will delight and astound visitors. Enjoy the beautiful features of the Japanese garden sprinkled with mums in glorious fall colors. Purchase beautiful mums to decorate your home or garden.
No RSVP required. Admission: Adults $7, Seniors $6, Members $5, children 12 and under free.

The link to their website is: http://www.csulb.edu/~jgarden/index.html

For their reviews on Yelp, check out: http://www.yelp.com/biz/earl-burns-miller-japanese-garden-long-beach

Part II - NOON

After viewing the Japanese garden, we'll then head over to Garden Grove and partake in seafood courtesy of Artist Crawfish Express.

I've been told by some foodie friends that Artist Crawfish is better than the uber popular Boiling Crab. And less crowded. To be on the safe side, I want to get at the restaurant right when they open at Noon.

The Yelp reviews have also been positive: http://www.yelp.com/biz/artist-crawfish-express-garden-grove

Average cost per person is $20. I am recommending family style dining so we can order every type of seafood they offer like crawfish, shrimp, oysters, catfish, and crab legs.

Okay, if you've never gone to the WeHo Halloween Carnaval - you're forgiven if

1) You just moved to LA

2) You are afraid of crowds or going by yourself

Other than that, its heresy to not have experienced this event yet.

Yes, there are too many people and parking is such a beyotch, but that comes with the territory of being the largest Halloween celebration in the world. On weekend night, the event can attract up to 350,000 and this year Halloween falls on a Saturday, so there's guaranteed to be a lot of people attending. I suspect there will even be more people that will be dressing up, to forget about the Recession for at least 1 night of merry and scary celebration.

The event officially starts at 6 PM, but if you want decent street parking, get there by 5 PM. Bring some quarters to feed the meter. Some of the meters run past 6 PM, so pay attention where you park and how long they keep charge for parking. You can also park at the Pacific Design Center. But by 7 PM or so, good luck on finding any parking.

We will be meeting and eating an early dinner at 5:30 PM at Pizza Rustica. Its a brand new location for this small chain: http://www.yelp.com/biz/pizza-rustica-west-hollywood-3
We will hang out at Pizza Rustica and wait for everyone to arrive. At 6:15 PM, we will start walking up and down the blvd. At that point, good luck trying to join the group since there might be too many people to find you in the thick of the crowd and festivities. You can try and text me if you want to contact me since I won't be able to hear you talk on the phone.

Basically the goal is to walk back and forth in The Strip and see as many people in costume as possible, until your feet get tired or the crowds become unbearable.

The official website for the event is: http://www.westhollywoodhalloween.com/

Those of you who dined at previous bread bar events know the routine already - unique inventive cuisine available for a short time along with a table-side chat with the chef. This one will be similar - but of course with a new menu and chef. The wonderful thing about these meals it a chefs spends months planning and preparing for their solo - so you are seeing some of their best work and at reasonable prices.

Eda Vesterman is a fitness nut who refuses to let that interfere with her love of fine food. So you will still see beef, seafood, duck but with sauces that use fruits, wine, vegetables, and fat where it adds flavor. She is also a big believer in organic and food balance (natural pairings of vegetables that aid nutrient absorption, etc). She came by to meet us at the last breadbar event, and looks forward to sharing her food with us.

Eda currently teaches cooking classes at Chefs Inc, and is a food consultant at the veterans administration and UCLA. She has worked in kitchens at Moomba here in LA, Bamboa in Boston, and the Patina Group - catering group.

Eda describes her food as fresh, pure, & simple. 4 Elements refer to Eda's dividing food into Air(the duck), Water (crab and scallops), Earth (mushrooms and squash) and Fire (Grilled fillet) - its the concept for her menu - and speaks to her ideals of balance.

Our last meal Hatchi meal was $30 per person plus drinks, although I suggest you budget closer to $40 to be safe. The small plates menu is below.

We will be eating family style and splitting the food bill. This is not a vegetarian friendly menu. We will order in 2 groups of 4 people. Photo required for attendance.

Parking $7 per 1/2 hour after the first 3 hours which are free.

Menu Below - Each Item is $8

mini duck burgers: ground duck breast infused with black tea and a special center on brioche
dungeness crab cake: grapefruit, mint and avocado
sous vide scallops 3 ways parsnip puree and corn butter, raspberry habanero and wasabi spinach basil sauces
butternut squash fritters on micro cilantro
wild mushroom and boucheron lasagna between layers of fresh spinach pasta
filet mignon medallions served with porcini and syrah reduction sauce and potato squares
green tea-ramisu ice cream
wild berry martini

IMPORTANT: Please RSVP to this event only if you are a Pleasure Palate Assistant Organizer

With 19 Assistant Organizers and growing and with all you planning events, I don't always get a chance to mix and mingle with some of you, so I decided that periodically, I'm going to host a small, intimate Assistant Organizer dinner and limit it to only 6 attendees, 5 of you + me. With a small group, it'll definitely give us a chance to chat and socialize, but it'll also give me a chance to address any issues or concerns or answer any questions that you may have in a more personal way.

Since I know that we're all spread out all over LA, I'll make sure that this roving AO Dinner moves around so that everyone will get a chance to attend at one point or another plus the choice of restaurants will range from high end to hole in the wall dining and to everything in between to accommodate any budget concerns. Please no guests!

Palate Food & Wine

Glendale is becoming a bit of a foodie destination. First there was Bashan and now Palate Food + Wine. Located on the ground floor of the 1928 seven-story Bekins moving depot, Palate is many things to many people: a restaurant, a wine vendor, a cheese store, a tasting bar and lounge and a "gastronomic library," with more than 200 titles including cookbooks, food history books and books on wine, cheese and coffee.

Chef/owner Octavio Becerra has created a nuanced menu of Mediterranean flavors using locally sourced ingredients and his Wine Director oversaw the acquisition of a spectacular selection of fine and hand-crafted wines from around the world and a knowledgeable staff is expert at helping you pair a bottle with your meal or put together a tasting flight at the tasting bar. The cheese cellar rounds off the impressive offerings with more than 50 high-quality cheeses.

This sounds like it'll be a delicious meal but as you know, for me, it's all about sharing food family-style, let's do exactly that and that way, we can sample several dishes as opposed to just one or two.

The story of Fogo de Chão® began in the mountainous countryside of Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, where its founders were born. Growing up, the brothers were immersed in the centuries-old Gaucho culture, a rich blend of traditions from European immigrants and Brazilian natives. An important element of this culture is churrasco, the Gaucho way of roasting meats over pits of open fire for delicious barbecues, which is always present at every festive occasion, especially family gatherings.

The young boys would learn how to grill the meats the Gaucho way from their fathers, becoming the caretakers of a culinary tradition passed down from generation to generation for over three centuries. Eventually, they would open locations in Brazil and eventually in the US. Currently, they have a restaurant in Beverly Hills we will be having a fabulous "Hump Day" dinner.

For those of you unfamiliar with the dining experience at Fogo de Chao, click the link below:
http://www.fogodechao.com/menu/dining-experience/

To check out the menu, go to:
http://www.fogodechao.com/fileadmin/site_files/Fogo_Menu_Web.pdf

Please note this is an All You Can Eat Meat Experience that will run you $56.50, not including drinks, wine, dessert, tax or gratuity, so plan your budget accordingly.

If you wish to just partake in just the Salad Bar, the cost will be $28.50, not including drinks, wine, dessert, tax or gratuity.

This will be definitely be a meaty experience so be sure to have a light breakfast and/or lunch. I hope to have you join me for this Brazilian culinary tradition.

Most of you have probably tried Father' Office (or FO as its more commonly known) by now. But given I'm doing a series on the best gourmet burgers has to offer, it makes sense to include FO in one of the stops since it was the restaurant that made gourmet LA burgers famous nationwide.

If you haven't eaten at FO yet, please note that they do not allow substitutions or modifications to your order. This is not Burger King - you can't order it your way. The waiter will laugh at you if you try to order ketchup as a condiment and if you can't eat cheese with a burger than you are out of luck. If you are a picky and fussy eater, then this place isn't for you.

The FO burger consists of:

Medium rare beef, fresh arugula, a french roll style baguett, grilled onions, and gruyere cheese.

Despite the no modifications/substitutions rules, FO is one of my fave gourmet burger joints in LA. The original location is in Santa Monica, but that location is tiny. To ensure that we can grab a table for 8, we will have the event at their Helms Bakery location in Culver City.

You cannot make reservations at FO, and its only open seating - meaning you almost always end up seating alongside strangers. So to ensure that all the Pleasure Palate diners eat together, arrive at 11:30 AM. The doors open at Noon, but this is a busy and popular place and I won't be able to save a seat for you if you arrive late.

Because there is only one type of burger to sample, this will be individual ordering. FO is actually a gastropub, so they have a wide variety of beers available for those of you that love beer. FO also serves other types of dishes, but we aren't there for their other dishes. I will be ordering a side of their sweet potato fries, which I love. You can also order standard french fries with your meal.

Expect to pay between $15 to $25 for your order. The burger costs at least $12 and fries and a beer (or other beverage) will bring it closer to $25.

For the FO virgins, here's more info via Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/fathers-office-los-angeles

My 2 fave holidays of the year are Halloween and Day of the Dead. Normally Day of the Dead occurs after Halloween but they are celebrating it a week earlier at the Forever Hollywood Cemetery.

Never been to a Day of the Dead celebration? Its similar to Halloween where some people dress up (usually with a skull or skeleton motif), but instead of going around and Trick Or Treating, they visit decorated gravesites. Cemeteries can be dull and spooky, but when the grave sites are covered in candles, flowers and rainbow colored decorations, it becomes more of a fiesta but with a goulish theme.

In SoCal, GROUND ZERO for Day of the Dead celebrations is in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Come join me as we experience this vibrant holiday and explore the cemetery in all its decked out glory.

Its important we be there by 4 PM when the gates open, because parking is a BITCH for this event. I would recommend arriving around 3:30 PM to secure a decent parking spot at the designated area.

Admission is $10 and parking is $10, so you will spend a minimum of $20, unless you carpool for this event. You'll probably want to spend some money buying drinks, snacks and/or arts and crafts, so bring extra cash.

There are 3 parking areas you can select from:

Parking Structure Addresses (estimated fee $10):
