SOLD OUT!: Day Trip to China Lake: Petroglyphs at Renegade Canyon

2. Petroglyph Tours cost $40 per person.

Make sure to select the Sunday, November 24th, tour as your 1st choice.

4. Follow the directions to submit the form with payment to the Maturango Museum

5. Because the tour is on an active Navy base, all persons on the tour must follow Navy rules.

6. All visitors must be USA citizens.

7. All visitors must be over 10 years of age.

8. No pets.

9. Visitors must be in good physical condition.

10. The petroglyphs are in a desert mountain canyon. The ground is uneven sand and rock, temperatures are extremely variable, water is essential.

11. Dress appropriately, no open-toed shoes.Bring required documents including valid vehicle registration and insurance. Your vehicle will be inspected on the base.

12. We have to be at the Maturango Museum by 6:30 AM. Its a 2 1/2 hour drive to the museum in Ridgecrest from LA. So you must either wake up at an ungodly hour to head over to the museum. Or you stay overnight at a hotel/motel near the USA.

Last winter, a friend told me that there was a museum that offered tours of petroglyphs in a military base and recommended it to me. I did some research and found out it was the Maturango Museum in Ridgcrest and they take you on a guided to to a Naval base in China Lake, a dry lake in the desert. So come join me on an all day trip to see petroglyphs at China Lake!

"In the canyons and plateaus of the Coso Mountains are thousands of images left by the hunter-gatherer people who populated this region in times past. The images, called petroglyphs, are carved into basalt rocks, and range in age from Paleoindian times to the present.

Public access is permitted to the petroglyphs that are located in lower Renegade Canyon (also known as Little Petroglyph Canyon). Access is limited to tours with Navy-approved guides.
