Family Style Dinner at Little Malaysia in El Monte

Outside of Thai and Vietnamese food, it is rather difficult to find good, authentic Southeast Asian cuisine. However, a couple of Pleasure Palate members mentioned that Little Malaysia is one of the better places to get Malaysian food. For me, that was good enough reason to give this place a try, especially since I am not too familiar with what Malaysian cuisine is like.

We will be dining "Family Style." The food bill will be split evenly among all attendees. Attendees will be responsible for paying for their own beverages. Please note that flexibility is an important part of family-style dining, and if you want to take a chance on attending, you have to be amenable to what the group will order. You don't have to eat everything that is ordered, but everyone pays equally, whether you eat everything or not. The goal for family-style dining is to allow for the entire group to sample as wide a variety of dishes as possible. If one or more attendees choose to order on their own, that limits the group's choices, which defeats the purpose of what Family-Style Dining is all about. If this definition of Family-Style Dining doesn't feel comfortable, this may not be the right type of event for you.

Here are some of the dishes we may order:

  • Spicy Lemon Grass Chicken
  • Rendang Beef - Stewed in Coconut Milk, Curry and Spices
  • Assam (Tamarind) Fried Shrimp
  • Kankung Belacan - Spicy Water Spinach
  • Fish Fillet Tofu Pot
  • Grilled Sambal (Chili Based Sauce) Eggplant
  • Malaysian Spicy Chili Crab
  • Curry Laksa Noodle Soup
  • Nasi Goreng Ikan Masin - Fried Rice with Dried, Salty Fish

You can view the menu here:, and here:

The expected cost per person is here is about $25.00, depending on how much food we order, any beverages, plus tax and gratuity. However, I would suggest that you bring $40.00 in CASH to settle your portion of your bill.

Yelp Reviewers give Little Malaysia an average of 3.50 Stars out of 5.0 from a 127 reviews. You can read those reviews here:

Free parking is available in the mini-mall where Little Malaysia is located, which is toward the back and on the right hand side of the mall. We will meet in front of the restaurant shortly before our 6:30pm reservation. As always, I will email all attendees my cell phone number the night before so that you can call or text me if you arrive before I do, or are running late or are lost.
