Film screening > Walesa Man of Hope

2013 Oscar Selection, Poland

Q&A with actor Robert Wieckiewicz after the screening

Andrzej Wajda (KATYN, ASHES AND DIAMONDS) brings the story of Lech Walesa and the Solidarity movement to the big screen. Robert Wieckiewicz (IN DARKNESS) is magnetic as Walesa, while Agnieszka Grochowska shines as his loyal wife, Danuta. The sharp screenplay by Janusz Glowacki hinges on Walesa's landmark 1981 interview, just months before Poland declared martial law, with Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci (Maria Rosaria Omaggio), recounting in flashback the previous decade-and-a-half of activism; Walesa would be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. Official Selection, 2013 Venice, Toronto, London, Warsaw Film Festivals.

DIR Andrzej Wajda; SCR Janusz Glowacki; PROD Michal Kwiecinski. Poland, 2013, color, 128 min. In Polish and Italian with English subtitles. NOT RATED

Great movie! I would highly recommend it to anyone if it shows somewhere again. It was a pretty full theater, so I am sorry that I missed the rest of you afterwards.

I just realized, after the fact, that I posted incorrect time for this event. Obviously, it started around 1 PM not 1 AM. Anyway, it was fun! It was good to see friends. I met new people, too. A few of us went to Panera Bread right next door after the lead actor left the Silver Theatre. We should plan on going to Panera Bread after the show if we have another Meetup at Silver Theatre. Don't you think? Please post your photos!

I wish I could come but I am performing at this time. I hope I will see it another time. I am very interested in it. I wonder if there will be another opportunity later on

This is a pretty good movie. I encourage everyone to see it.

"Walesa. Man of Hope" is an entertaining reenactment of history-making events. It is a good walk down the memory lane as well as an engaging primer into recent Polish history. The film emphasizes the strains which activism placed on the activists' family lives. The critical roles of Solidarity's women are not omitted in this picture.

After the movie, Robert Więckiewicz -- who is among the most popular actors in Poland today -- provides an interesting glimpse into how the movie was made. Responding to questions from the moderator and members of the audience, Robert Więckiewicz recalls his collaboration with director Andrzej Wajda and screenwriter Janusz Głowacki. The lead actor's stories take us on an imaginary visit onto the film set.

Tell your friends about this film!
