Halloween Carnival 2013 in WeHo

  • Oct 31, 2013 · 8:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Every year the City of West Hollywood, CA, hosts the wonderful West Hollywood Halloween Carnival that draws over 200,000 people to the city with costumes along Santa Monica Blvd.
7pm until Midnight. Clubs and bars open until 2am.

This is a great opportunity for some of us to get creative to show case our talents and capture all the amazing images.

So far the following people have confirmed to dress up

• Model Vanessa Inga as Minnie Hoochie Mouse

• Model Cynthia as Storm,

• and I, as Wolverine.

Hopefully more of you will join us and dress up as well.

We will be meeting up right smack on the center of Santa Monica Blvd, and Robertson Blvd from 8:00 p.m. till 9:00 pm. After that time, we'll migrate and walk around.

Park on the Beverly Center Shopping Center parking Structure for a minimum fee. You'll have to walk about 4 blocks, but it will be hassle free. Trust me on this one.

Hope to see you there!

It is SO CRAZY there! It was just a maze for miles even to get Close to any actual parking. Let alone getting out of your car and making it to one end or another. BUT definitely non-stop fun madness.

You got to stop tottering around on those 6" heels.. I know it is holloween in WeHo but you should leave that to the professional models in the group.... ;-p. Sorry to hear about your arm.. Hope you are ok (broken arm is never ok, but otherwise ok). Take care.

Well, I give up. Tried, really did, but when Robertson hit melrose they closed the street! I'm not from here, my GPS keeps telling me to turn right on a street I don't even see. I'm just over it. Hope you all have a great time. Maybe I'll meet you at the next event.

Sorry to hear that. Parking at the Beverly center was the thing to do. We'll see you next time.

Uber is like Lyft, it is similar to a taxi service but it is booked through your Smartphone and is often less $$$ then a typical taxi cab.

I think the closest you can get is San Vicente and Melrose by the Beverly Center. But you may be able to get close to it once you're there.

I decided to ride my motorcycle there. I think I can find a parking spot to squeeze in near SM and Robertson. I also decided to take just one lens. 18-55mm with a super light itty bitty flash that I got from the camera expo for $5 and never tried. What the hell, go for it, the goblins wont kill me. Look for Dracula.

I'll be there! I have a Canon 7D but the only lenses I have are the kit lens [masked]mm) and the super cheap 50mm 1.8. I only want to bring one with me, which one should I choose? I'm tempted to go with the 50mm sense it's pretty good in low light.

Hi Vic, sorry, I just got back from tennis. Anyway, I've never shot at ISO 3200. The fastest ISO I've ever used is 1800 and that was for shooting cars on a dark street. For goblins walking around, I generally shoot subjects within the flash range at f5.6 or f8. This range is 5 to 25 feet. I have a good flash with a zoom head that I use for wide and telephoto shots. Usually not more than ISO 400. I am usually pretty lucky at 1/125th shutter speed, even with a 200mm zoom. I don't mind having the background dark. I may experiment with a faster ISO though.

      1 · October 30, 2013

    • Vic B.

Hi Steve, Gosh, tennis, lucky you. Nowadays, I just dream tennis. hehehe... Ok. will start at ISO400 f5.6, 1/125 and adjust if need be. Thanks for the tip.

Hard to say which lense to take. I used to have a Minolta 35-70 which was perfect for this kind of stuff, but it went bye-bye with film. I think the 30mm could be fun but you may have to get real close. The 85 would be good for pictures without getting on top of your subject, I mean, in their face.

True, true. very crowded. So I guess it is good to ask yourself, "what am I doing?" If it is just to look, then relax the camera, if for something specific, then look for it and capture it and relax, if for something wild and surprising, just remain ready with camera and flash turned on and relax until you see it. I think I will just relax, and look.

Let me just say a few words about Santa Monica Blvd. Halloween Night. I have been a few times to know. First off, unless you have a high ISO camera like a Mark III, you're going to be looking at Flash. This Event is a Jam-Packed Super High Intense Thunderdome with Things Happening every split second. Don't turn to long or you'll miss it. Speaking of Missing it - I will bet give everyone I meet in the beginning a dollar if they end up with me in the end. Tie a rope around everyones waist and hollar a lot. At one point the crowd will be so dense you'll want lotion with that. Getting back to photography. TTL Flash and your ability to dial your camera is best. A Flash bracket or off camera TTL cable is nice. Extra battery power is nice. Bring plenty of memory card. Because it only happens once a year! :-) If anyone wants to keep up with me or needs a round-up my contact number is[masked] 3435. I'll be the guy dress up as a photographer. heh.

Hi Francis, I just checked the MTA website. the metro bus 704 has a route all along santa monica blvd. You can get off at San Vicente which is not far from Robertson. I guess you can board the 704 anywhere along Santa Monica Blvd as there are a number of stops. See and print out the map at mta.net and click on maps, then click on 704. I think I will try this too except right now I don't know where I will leave my car. Hopefully there is a park and ride lot around the 704. Another alternative is that a few of us meet at a designated spot an car pool over to the location.

    1 · October 28, 2013

    • Vic B.

Hi, I'll be taking the 4 or 704 from Vermont.

      October 28, 2013

    • designdog

If People email me directly - And we can sync up timing - I am will to pick people up at the Metro station to avoid more delays and heavy walking. I will park on Sunset or Beverly Center and walk from there. It doesnt really start picking up until Dark.

Here is the map for #4 metro. http://media.metro.net/riding_metro/bus_overview/images/004.pdf
Don't know if I will wear my Dracula cape on the bus or put it on later.
:) Car pooling is still a good idea. Maybe we could call this bus pooling if others want to meet at S.M and Western.

The metro #4 goes much later and all along Santa Monica Blvd. I think I will leave my car somewhere around where the 101 intersects Western and Santa Monica Blvd. There is a stop there. Then I'll take the bus west to San Vicente.

Are there any Metro train stop that is within walking distance of there? I am thinking of the Red Line. I would not mind walking several blocks.

    October 28, 2013

No, unfortunately there isn't any Metro rail going that way, yet. But Steve Scar has provided you some useful information.
