While we celebrate the holidays, let's remember that it's no holiday for the 8 elephants at the Oregon Zoo. Their routine is the same as it is every day and it never involves any freedom to roam or forage on trees or do any of the things that elephants love to do. In 2008, the zoo and Metro promised a preserve and 5 years later there is no preserve, or any timeline as to when there ever will be. Join In Defense of Animals and Free the Oregon Zoo Elephants to speak out and let the public know this is not OK and the elephants need to be released to a preserve or sanctuary. 20 zoos have closed their elephant exhibits. It's time for the Oregon Zoo to do the same, as even with the zoo's new 6 acre onsite expansion, it is far from enough space for the world's largest land mammal. All the elephants need to be released, starting with Packy who is 51 and deserves to experience some freedom before he dies. Signs and handouts will be provided.
