Fall 2013 Euchre Tournament!!

Hey All -- Because of the high demand for this tournament, I'm modifying the format from what I previously posted:  This is the way I'm planning now:

Initial partners are chosen by lot. After each game, all players  record the quantity of points their partnership won.  Winners of the game stay at their table.  Losers of each game walk (move to the next table).  If a game is tied, then the team that advances is chosen by lot.  Partners switch on each subsequent game.

If there is a table with less than 4 players, they sit out that game (but get credit for 7 points as detailed below), then:

   - If 1 player, he/she advances to the next table for the next game, along with one of the losers from the previous table, chosen by lot.

   - If 2 players, they advance to the next table, and switch to play with another partner in the next game.

   - If 3 players, two players chosen by lot advance to the next table for the next game, and switch to play with another partner in the next game.

Everyone will play 6 "games" consisting of 8 hands.  Anyone who sits out a game because of a non-multiple of 4 players, will receive 7 points in that game.  Games do not "end" if a team reaches 10 points - rather, play all 8 hands, and record all the points.  I will try to keep a running scoresheet.

The winner of the tourney is the player who totals the most points.  If  there are ties, the prize money will be split between the tied players.

Timewise, we should finish in about 3 hours.

Tournament Start time will still be 7PM.  Latecomers will be dealt with at my discretion; call my cell # if you have RSVP'd and will be delayed.  At this time, I do not plan to add anyone who arrives after 7PM.  (So... be EARLY!)  If a player starts the tournament, but must depart before the tournament ends, he will not accrue any points after his departure.

Buy-in:  $5 per head.   Prizes:    1st Place - 40% of the pot;  2nd Place - 30%; 3rd Place - 20%;  4th Place - 10%

This is our first attempt at this type of tournament - we're bound to learn some lessons along the way, so please let me know if there are any issues.

After reviewing the rankings I discovered there was, in fact, one person with less points. Who shall remain nameless. But I thank you for taking the burden from my shoulders. :)

Just for the record..... Lisa was the winner of the trophy, with 46 points earned in the 6 games. Patricia was 2nd with 44. Renee was 3rd with 43. Camille, Shari, and Dwayne tied for 4th with 42. Greg would've won the booby prize if there was one!!

My grateful thanks to Jesse for providing the hand-made trophy!

Thank you to everyone for showing up.. and putting up with the startup confusion. Please send your ideas to improve it for the future tournaments!

Pictures are posted..... it was great FUN hosting this.... anyone else care to host the spring tourney?

Looking forward to finally getting to play some euchre again!

Bringing a friend from Ohio (Sara) who tried to sign up for the group and RSVP for the tourney yesterday but is getting a message that her membership is pending and she cannot RSVP.

      What is 500?

      November 16, 2013

    • Jesse

500 is a game that is similar to euchre in many respects. It is a played with nearly a full deck, and there is a bidding round. Considering that there are more cards and the bidding round, it is considerably more complicated than euchre. And, IMHO, it's a great game.

So if you play a loner, does your partner also get four points? :)

    November 16, 2013

    • Jesse

      Yep.

We could make a side pot for most successful loners.

I have modified the format of the tournament to allow more than 20 players. See above. See you all Saturday!!

I agree, I think Ron will add a few more especially if it is four more.
One more table would be fine, I'm sure.

    Regarding format ...

I'm a big fan of what I will call the round robin format. Everybody plays the same number of games, initial partners are chosen by lot, losers walk (move to the next table), winners stay, partners switch on each subsequent game. Winner of tourney is the player who totals the most points. The biggest advantages of this format are:
    (1) Partner's skill is mostly irrelevant.
    (2) Not a lot of delay (don't have to wait for one game to finish to fill out a bracket.)
    (3) Everybody plays the same number of games.

I like that format, too. That way everyone gets to play!

Is 7 p.m. a firm time? If not firm, I'd prefer afternoon where we'd be done by 5 or 6. Anyone else?

I like Jesse round robin format suggestion. Sort of a bummer to go and only have a guarantee of playing two games.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
