Calling all Westerlings! Looking for folks in Buxton, Hollis, Gorham and other points west of Portland to join us in one of our ongoing "getting to know our neighbors" homestead tours. These are casual occasions to walk a piece of land, discuss what plans and projects are afoot, and then gather for a potluck meal and more discussion.

Sandi Jensen and Nathan Broaddus have volunteered to show what they're up to in Gorham. We'll see a small orchard, vegetable gardens and more, and hear how permaculture is inspiring changes in their landscape.

Please join in and let's see how we can share resources, ideas and energy locally!

5pm - gather and walk and talk

6pm - potluck picnic. Please bring a dish to share and your potluck kit - plate, bowl, cup, utensils, napkin.

We had a great time finally getting out to another meetup. It was nice to see all those gardens and the work they are putting into their land. We've had great luck with the free wood chip route that Sandi and Nate referenced. We got lucky a few years ago when they were doing a lot of tree trimming in our area, I stopped one day and asked the crew if they needed a close place to dump chips. They stopped by to check out my driveway and where I wanted the chips. Then for the next two weeks or so they dumped all their chips at our place. It was free for us and couldn't have been easier, plus the guys were happy dumping at our place because we were 10 min. closer than where they were dumping. So if you see trucks near you working and have some space for chips to be dumped it never hurts to stop and ask.

Truly a spectacular experience! Your garden and home are a work of art and love. I planted the cilantro, raspberries and jump-ups today. They weren't wild about the heat but looked fine this evening.Thank you very much!
I heard from a lot of people that they would be interested in coming out to my farm. The grains are starting to head now- the barley looks quite good at the moment and the flax is getting taller but has not yet bloomed. If we did schedule a get together I suspect we could fire up the outdoor oven and make a bunch of flat bread and whatever.

For those who wanted the lemon balm cookie recipe:

1/4-1/3 cup minced lemon balm leaves
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    1 cup softened butter
    2 eggs
    1/2 tsp lemon extract
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    2 1/2 cups flour
    2 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 350 (I tried making some of these in the sun oven, but I don't think this recipe is well adapted for that technique).

Cream together sugar, lemon balm and butter - beat until fluffy. Add remaining ingredients and mix until well combined.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Remove them from the cookie sheet while they're still warm and cool. They come out of the oven very soft, but will firm up as they cool. Enjoy! (What I brought in the bag was one batch, minus about 4 cookies)

I didn't know the cookies contained lemon balm - I'm excited I can use some of my lemon balm this way! Who brought the marinated tofu? Would you be willing to post the recipe?

Hey Sandi. I think Ben and I left a pink Nalgene in the big garden while digging cilantro. We'll figure out a way to grab it back. Thanks for a great evening!

Found it hiding right behind the strawberry mound... You'll have to come back for more raspberries and pick it up when you do.

Is it ok if we bring our little Huntr?

    June 13, 2013

    • Sandra J.

Huntr is OK as long as he doesn't get lost in the tall grass (large unmowed fields around) or jump in the pool.

      June 14, 2013

    • Jesse M.

He'll be fine in the grass...and definitely no worries about the pool. He's not quite "into" water yet!

Hi all, Kids are welcome and if it's a hot day and you like swimming, bring your suits and towels as we have a pool. Looking forward to meeting you all and having a good time.
