2nd Annual Maine Permaculture Network Gathering: Mapping the Landscape

We invite permaculture designers, teachers, organizers and PDC grads from across Maine to join us for the 2nd statewide winter gathering of our network during which we can connect, dream and make action plans for the coming year around topics we hold dear.

Theme for this Gathering: Mapping the Landscape

  • Identify who is already working on what...individuals, groups, businesses.
  • Permaculture in Maine by geography and by specialty or niche
  • Where are the gaps or unmet needs?  Where are the synergies beyond our own network?  How can we shift these forward?

This will be an intense and rewarding day of connecting, sharing and "going deep" into the promise of how the permaculture community can continue to be of service to our state, its people and the place itself.  After Asset Mapping in the morning this event will be convened in Open Space, a technique that presents an over-arching theme or question and empowers the attendees not only to create their own agenda for the day, but drive the outcome and experience as they see fit.

In Open Space, facilitators help open, hold and close the space with just the right amount of structure so that all the work that happens in between is truly by, of and for those who show up.  Proceedings from the day are captured live and published that very day. To learn more about Open Space Technology, check out http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/wiki.cgi?AboutOpenSpace

We do have a bit of overhead for this event and we are asking for a $5-10 sliding scale donation.  By RSVP-ing "yes" you are committing to be an active participant in the creation of our resilient future in Maine.  We will need 4 volunteers with laptops to scribe notes "live" over wifi as the sessions are happening.

Preliminary Agenda:

  • 8:30 Coffee/Tea/Morning Refreshments
  • 9:00 Opening Circle &
  • 9:15 Introductions of All to All - Brief Intros & 9:45 Intro Clusters
  • 10:30 Break
  • 11:00 - 12:15  Asset Mapping by Geography and by Topic
  • 12:15 into Lunch Cluster-sourcing afternoon topics
  • 12:30 - 1:45 Free Time and Lunch
  • 1:15 Marketplace Agenda-Setting for Afternoon Open Space
  • 1:30 - 3:00 Open Space Sessions A x 5 topics
  • 3:00 - 4:30 Open Space Sessions B x 5 topics
  • 4:30 - 5:00 Free Time/Refreshments while Proceedings are assembled
  • 5:00 - Evening News / Closing Circle / Next Steps
  • 6:00 - Adjourn and optional supper/social activities!

What to bring:

Your passion for permaculture in Maine, a notebook, a laptop (especially if you can type notes during your session), a healthy lunch item to share, and your own potluck kit (plate/bowl/utensils/mug/napkin).

Great to see everyone at the gathering. Take a look at the notes, etc. and we'll all be following up re: turning our mapping/brainstorming into a more digestible and usable format, more or better connection methods for a statewide network, and other "actions" discussed in the various groups. Also, think about what format you might want the 3rd annual gathering to take and who might like to co-host or be on a team to organize. Different part of the state perhaps? This is a place-holder date but all open to re-design: http://www.meetup.com/portlandp...

I thought this was a great event. I felt we moved Permaculture in Maine together as a group, which isn't easy to do. Plus we moved it with a spirit of fun, collaboration, camaraderie and true respect for others which is really "wicked" hard to do.. but we are doing it. Let's all go out and do cool great things in the year to come.

I will have more Hopi Heirloom Orange Squash seeds in a couple weeks. If I ran out before you got yours, send me an email with you snail mail address and I will send them to you then.
For those who inquired about the seed's origin. I got the original seed from Seeds of Change in 2008 (Hopi Orange Squash – Traditional/Rare). The squash you ate yesterday was grown from seeds I grew in 2009.

This is last-minute, but I'm in South Portland and would gladly join a carpool heading up from this area. I could meet anywhere along 295 and would chip in for gas! [masked]

Carpooling from north of Rockland? I'll be leaving Orono at 6:30 am and Belfast by 7:45 to arrive in Rockland at 8:30. I can drive the whole way or meetup and ride.

    December 5, 2012

    • Joline B.

Hi Dee, Also leaving from Belfast bet 7:30-7:45. WOuld you like to carpool last leg?

      December 7, 2012

    • Dee C.

Yes. I was hoping we would connect. I'm picking up Claudia in Orono. We'll see you in Belfast. Call me around 7:15 to work out details?

Sorry, but I'm utterly spent and won't be attending. I look forward to reading the notes and hope you all have a beautiful, productive day.

Hannah our son and I will be leaving from Pownal and be able to pick up people in Freeport or further north on the way if needed. We have two seats available but one is beside our sons car seat so may be a bit squished. Let us know,[masked]

The venue is secured and i confirmed use of the church kitchen, big ovens and all! The wifi will be a little punky though. We might not have easy wifi downstairs where we will be convening, but we will be able to do all of our word processing. We might have to go upstairs in a stairwell to catch the office wifi, where we can upload all our word processing into the google doc. 'Tis but a minor technical hurdle we will overcome on Saturday!

Shannon, Julie, and anyone else: I will be coming from Auburn. Could meet folks in Brunswick to carpool. Are you planning to stay for the potluck afterward?

    December 5, 2012

    • Shannon R.

Hi Jim! I'd like to stay for the potluck, but I'll leave that up to Julie, since she's driving. I'm fine with either decision.

      December 6, 2012

    • Julie

Jim, We could pick you up on our way north if you would like...where would be a good spot right off of 295? I am guessing that it could be around 7:15 or so. I am up for staying for a bit afterwards for the closing festivities.

Is anyone driving up and back the same day and leaving from the Gorham/Scarborough/Buxton area? I'd love to carpool and would pitch in for gas.

    November 28, 2012

    • Shannon R.

Hi Julie. That would be great! Where in Scarborough, and at what time? I can get dropped off.

How about the park n ride off of exit 42 (b/w Payne rd and turnpike)?? 6:30??

@Haas. We will be renting the kitchen and so i'm presuming we will have access to ovens and such. I will confirm on Thursday all of those fine details after my return. Stay tuned!

Hi Loren, I think that a meat dish would be lovely. We can just label stuff and people can choose. We will have a place available to plug in crock pots. Haas, will find out if we have access to the actual kitchen for re-heating, etc.

    December 4, 2012

  • Haas T.

I am planning on bringing baked heirloom Hopi squash – see my photo. Will there be an oven to bake it in or heat it up? I'll probably have ~50 three inch square pieces baked.

Looking forward to meeting folks this Saturday in our new hometown. Suggestions for potluck? We can bring grassfed organic meat if there is a place to plug in a crockpot or an oven available for warming. Any thoughts on number of servings so we don't come up short?

    Thanks Loren and Pamela

Last call for child are and overnight hospitality requests! Email or message Jesse by tomorrow. Thanks!

    November 30, 2012

  • Jesse W.

We can organize for a couple of items if there is interest:
    *Childcare
*Overnight accommodations We have the option of renting the church's nursery and finding childcare volunteers if anyone has a need for that.
We can also find overnight accommodations for people traveling from far afield. Rockland might be a haul for some of you and we can find "in-home hospitality" for a night if anyone has interest in that.

We will arrange for these if anyone expresses interest, but please communicate with us soon!

Jesse, David and I would both like to participate in the event so we'll be bringing Rowan. If anyone else has kids to bring, let's find a way to organize the kids' activities/care.

      November 15, 2012

  • Lisa F.

Please note, we may be able to organize childcare and/or some kids activities in another room of the facility where we are meeting, if there's interest.
