Interested in learning about the permaculture design process but not sure if you want to invest in a full-blown design course?

Please join us in Brunswick Maine for this popular Permaculture Design Seminar Series which we started offering in 2009. If, after taking this Intro Short Course, you are interested in proceeding to the full Permaculture Design Course (PDC) starting in April, your full fee for this event will be applied toward the PDC fee. This is an affordable and accessible way to get your feet wet and decide if you would like to learn more about the potential for permaculture design.  The instructor for this short course is Lisa Fernandes.

SPECIAL: We can take two students for time dollars in lieu of US dollars. Inquire with LisaF if you are interested and are an Hour Exchange Portland member (or member of other local time bank which may have reciprocity with HEP).

February 3 & 24 in Brunswick Maine (9:00 am to 3:00 pm both days)

Participants in this Intro to Permaculture Design Short Course will meet on two Sundays from 9:00 am to approx 3:00 pm at the home of our sample "client" to work through a real, live design process. With our client (who will have completed a questionnaire in advance) we will co-create a practical permaculture design based on their specific goals and the assets and challenges of their site.

You will come away with a strong foundation for understanding and applying permaculture ethics and design principles. You will have a framework and a process for approaching a residential property from a permaculture perspective. You will feel confident about taking strides on your own property, if applicable, and will dispel that feeling of not knowing "where to start."  You will understand much more about permaculture as a design approach.

Space is limited to 10 students.

Some student comments from the last iteration of this seminar:

“To my beginner's mind, the challenge elements of this property seemed to be overwhelming and complicated, but in the end Lisa began to bring together aspects of the property's challenges and assets and a design began to synthesize that was manageable and cohesive."

"I am impressed with the way Lisa teaches. It is great fun getting together in a small group like that and learning new things."

“It was excellent!!! I left the gathering thrilled and excited by all I'd learned."

“It was a great experience to walk through the initial analysis phase of a permaculture design. I came away with a better understanding of how to approach permacluture design and some of the questions to ask. ”

“It was superb. Much more than I could have reasonably expected. I'm very excited. ”

Does anyone want to carpool from Portland? I have a pickup truck - so room for one passenger comfortably. I'd also be happy to ride with someone else and share cost of gas.

Is there any reading or other prep to do in advance of the workshop?

I could carpool from that parking lot near the boat store/coffee shop/bank end of the Hannafords parking lot in Brunswick, meeting there at about 8:30am tomorrow. If anyone wants to do that, let me know tonight (Fri.). [I live in Brunswick.] See you all soon!

Hi everyone! So it looks like more people can do Saturday 3/30 so that's what we will do. If you cannot do that day, please email personally so that we can make some other arrangement.

Thanks! I will also put through some refresher information to keep the material in your mind for a couple more weeks!

ah well, my highest priority has to be the 'renovating old apple trees' course, so I will be one of the people 'making other arrangements' unless that course is canceled. Can't do everything..looking forward to the refresher information anyway!

Love this course. My daughter sent this from college, in support of my efforts to learn permaculture; if you're into heating systems:

Will meet at marina/bank/coffee end of lot Sunday at 8:30-8:40 to join in carpooling coordination....looking forward to class!

      See you there at 8:30.

Oh and 4 wheel drive to get up the hill...

I have room for 4 additional passengers. Will also be at coffee end of lot by 8:40. Black Isuzu Trooper.

The parking lot is a big one. One side of the parking lot has a Hannafords and the other side of the lot has a small boat marina a bank, and a coffee shop. The marina/bank/coffee end of the lot will be easiest to find each other in.

    Thanks everyone!

Fantastic first meetup for me! Like Andrew I felt the material was familiar but Lisa really connected some of the dots, especially needed our outside time linking all that information to an actual landscape. I left feeling empowered and ready to start the first steps of planning my own space. Looking forward to this weekend! In regards to parking- Im planning to be at the Hannaford parking lot between[masked] looking for a carpool friend or several. I drive a green subaru and will be wearing a loud coat (white with bright color print). Hope to run into someone there.

Lot of great info. It was good to see how all of these ideas surrounding permaculture come together into a cohesive system or pattern. I felt like most of the info taught, I was familiar with, but there was no connections between any of it in my mind. I came away from day one with those connections made, and look forward to cementing them in my mind on day two.

Hi folks, no snow visible at this point, at least in Portland. The forecast looks like cold and cloudy but most of the chance of snow is now passed! See you for 9am start!

Is there a plan in case of snow? I just moved here--from the south--and don't drive well on snow. If the snow starts falling overnight, will the meetup be cancelled?

What number River Road and is there a phone number just in case?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
