Join with Buxton/Hollis/Gorham members and other "westerlings" for another great movie night and discussion. The selection this month is "Introduction to Permaculture Design" with designer Geoff Lawton, where he "...takes you into the world of Permaculture Design and introduces you to a new way of looking at the world. Learn how to apply your design skills by observing, analyzing and harmonizing with the patterns of Nature. Discover the theory and then see the examples in action in this unique video. Essential information for anyone interested in learning more about Permaculture and how they can apply it in their daily lives to create sustainable abundance."

    Thanks to the souls who made it last night for a very lovely evening. My apologies to those who had questions yesterday re: holding the event. I was in class in the afternoon and didn't get home until just before the Meetup. In the future, if an event is canceled, I'll post here with enough time so folks aren't already on the road and can make other plans.

      Thank you! For hosting in your lovely home and turning the heat way up for us--what a treat! And thanks for the Hoolahoop demo--I am stopping at Home depot tonight for supplies to create my own! and on the unique growing ideas: I can't wait to discover what will grow in my 1,500 feet of stump berm at the edge of my pasture!! At first I was sad because so much earth was included--but now I think it may work out.

    Great evening and movie. The movie filled in some of my questions. Great discussion afterwards too. But as we all discussed, it would be good to get one that is more about the local climate. Anyone know of material, movie, book, website or other, that covers permaculture application in a cold climate, please send a pointer....

      Hi Dave. You can come over and browse my library if you'd like. I have Edible Forest Gardens Vol. 1 & 2 by Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier; Peter Bane's new The Permaculture Handbook: Garden Farming for Town and Country; Toby Hemenway's Gaia's Garden. These are all applicable to our area, and I have a bunch of other references as well. You can also find a ton of great stuff at http://www.permies.co.... Talk to you later! - Shannon

      ooh- I was just looking at the 2 vol set by Jacke and Toensmeier- after you mentioned omega level diversity I looked them up- and I'm not ready to pay that price for the set but would love to get a look at them sometime. Thankks again! lw

    Hairy/scary road travel, but well worth the slipnslide journey from Deerwander to Ushers Mill.
    For those who want it, a website allowing you to see the film is http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/introduction_to_permaculture_design_by_geoff_lawton_2009/ . Shows the whole thing but doesn't allow fast forward or instant replay.
    For soil survey maps GIS enabled;
    http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/HomePage.htm .
    They had a class about it at the ag trade show- I couldn't make it but looked it up online. It may take you a bit to figure out how to set it up and start (I know it did me)- but where else can you find out the suitability of your land for (among other things) travel by humvees, bivouacks, and foxholes? Coming soon to a field near you..hmm. I'd rather grow wheat..lw

    I won't be coming because Kristin and I were going to car pool and the roads are too trecherous. Nathan Broaddus (my son) will also not be attending. I would love to see this movie and would offer our house in Gorham for a movie night some other time if others know how to get hold of this movie.

      Good thing we didn't start driving! It looks like we won't be able to be there because of the snow. I hope all of you who are there have a great time!

    My dad and I are also unsure of whether we'll be able to drive. We will see how it's looking out there.

      I live in Gorham also. My dad will tell me how he thinks the roads are when he arrives home in 20 minutes.
