Word of mouth and co-workers.
It's a self-selected group of people with common interests in sustainability, traditional foodways, gardening, and thoughtful design. More important, however, is that it's an opportunity to meet people in my local community face to face to share experiences instead of just reading books, blogs, and message boards.
I live and work in downtown Portland. I've been gardening organically at the Valley Street Community Garden for almost ten years. I love the close urban setting, but I would like to have some more land someday where I can expand the garden, keep chickens, etc.
I'm an artisan bread baker living and working in the Old Port and gardening organically in a community garden plot. I'm drawn to traditional, transformational, long, slow processes like bread baking, charcuterie, fermenting, canning, and preserving.
