I am currently fund raising for a small and inspiring grassroots permaculture project for a school lunch program in the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana. Buduburam is a refugee settlement that is mostly made up of Liberians but also minority populations from Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast. There is only one free school in the camp and the permaculture food gardens would help sustain the free school lunch program at this school.
Information about the project can be found on the Peace Action Maine website at www.peaceactionme.org/permaculture-peace
If anyone would like to contribute or get involved with the project please let me know!!
The project will start rolling in January 2008 and the more we can raise the better! This is really a great example of how permaculture can be utilized in a place where it will make a tremendous improvement in the lives of those involved. The food gardens will not only supply nutritious food for the children but will also be a therapeutic place for people to retreat. The two primary goals is to supply food but also be a place for conflict resolution and peace building skills. This project will also serve as an example for others like it to be set up in places where there has been conflict.
