You Are Going To Die - Apocalyptic Lecture at the RI

You're Going To Die is part of a series of lectures at the Royal Institute curated by TV Presenter Dallas Campbell of Bang Goes the Theory Fame.

Here's what the event is all about:

"So you think you understand the fallibilities of the human mind? You're not out of the woods yet. The universe is a dangerous place. Whoever said: ‘you have nothing to fear but fear itself', obviously hadn't taken deadly pandemics, super-volcanoes, gamma ray bursts, and of course the vacuum metastability event into account. If you've been worrying about your five-a-day intake recently, you don't know what worrying is. Not even the awesome power of a hi-viz-jacket can save you from most of the cataclysmic events that lie in wait . We run down some of the most popular ways the world will end. If someone tells you to ‘cheer up it might never happen' should come to this"

The event starts at 7pm and will finish at 8.30pm.

Tickets: £10 Standard, £7 Concessions and Free to members. I recommend that you buy your tickets in advance.

This should be really good fun. Details regarding where to meet and drinks afterwards will be posted nearer the time.

What a brilliant talk. Really interesting and mostly accessible except for the quantum mechanics when my brain started to hurt somewhat. It loses a star for the horror that was the cabaret *shudder*

It seems difficult to destroy ourselves after a great talk.

Not quite as popularist or as popular as I thought it would be, nice to get a reasonable chunk of Q&A, and good to have a coherent view on at least the asteroid issue (though no-one mentioned unreflective ones... ;) ). Ice 9! :)

We've moved into the lecture theatre. We're the seats on the left hand side 3 rows up.

Early finish. (8.30pm) I trust there will be a pub afterwards in which we can drown our sorrows, before the final, apocalyptic call of "Last Orders!"

Not at all Liam. Just a reminder folks, if you haven't got your tickets yet, please make sure you buy them in advance to avoid disappointment. There are still tickets left....for now...

So am I. In a nervous, neurotic sort of way.
