Database servers have hardware requirements different from other infrastructure software, specifically unique demands on I/O and memory. Join PostgreSQL core committer Bruce Momjian in a presentation that covers these differences and various I/O options and their benefits. Topics include solid-state drives (SSD), battery-backed RAID, controllers, and caching.
The meetup will take place at AppNexus, who will be generously providing pizza, beer, and soda as well.
Photo identification is required to enter the building.
Please do. Would love to share that with the rest of my engineering and network operations team

Interesting presentation; Programmers normally don't think about all the software layers in writing to disk and to a database. This was highlighted.

Bruce delivered big time with a clear, focused, great informational session. Information was timely, up to data and completely relevant. No fluff.

Not up to speed with the way start-ups run databases : cheap!
How much performance does an SSD drive get me at a certain level of load ? What is the variation in load and how can I measure it ? What in-memory caching schemes can I use ? How can I know if my driver is any good ?

Sure, the slides are already online:

If you click on "Show Locations" at the top, you will see a recording of a webcast of the presentation.

I would love to attend but I am committed elsewhere. If there is a slide deck (or a video recording) of the presentation, will it be available for posting somewhere public (or perhaps emailed to those who couldn't make it?)
